Monday, May 25 (9:58 PM Local): FINAL SCORE – Cairns Marlins 108, Portland Pilots 101 (12 min quarters)… BOX SCORE
Just as we suspected, Cairns was a very good team and pulled out the win in the closing seconds after a back-and-forth contest. Cairns was a true professional team in midseason form and by far the most talented/polished team the Pilots faced on this tour. It was a VERY physical contest, not reminiscent of an ‘exhibition game.’ The difference was the hot shooting and all-around play of Dwayne Vale, who finished with 40 points on just 19 shot attempts. Nik Raivio and Robin Smeulders paced Portland with 17 points each. Luke Sikma was a dominating presence, but was limited to only 18 minutes because of foul trouble. Sikma finished with 13 points, rebounds and five assists and was on pace for a triple-double near the end of the second quarter. Cairns shot 52 percent for the game, Portland 49 percent. The Marlins also made 17-of-35 three-pointers.
Well, that will wrap up our awesome Australian adventure as we get up and leave the hotel at 3:45 AM tomorrow, so not much sleep and a long way to get back to the friendly confines of the beautiful Chiles Center. We are scheduled to arrive in Portland on Tuesday at 1 p.m. (PT).
Hopefully the blog was worthwhile, I know that I had a blast doing the ‘work.’ I’ll try to put together a comprehensive photo slideshow from the whole trip when we get back. If anyone is interested, shoot me an email and we can work out getting you a copy (brough@up.edu).
Monday, May 25 (8:36 AM Local): It is our last full day Down Under and it is a game day. We'll grab breakfast then head to the arena for a 10 AM shootaround. Some fun pics from yesterday out at the reef are below in slideshow form.
Sunday, May 24 (6:33 PM Local): It has been a fun last two days here in Cairns which included an all day adventure out to the Great Barrier Reef today. We just got back and the guys had a blast. What an amazing place. We swam with all kinds of unique and exotic fish and had a beautiful boat ride to and from the reef. Despite all of the amazing sea life, the highlight (or lowlight, depending on your perspective) involved Coach Reveno. There is a back story which may take a bit to explain, but it is well worth it, here we go...
During Prof McGinty's class in the first week of 'May Madness' Rev jokingly said he would wear a speedo when we went to the reef, which received quite the response from the team. Fast forward to yesterday afternoon when we arrived at the hotel in Cairns. Coach Rev gave the guys instructions for the rest of the day in the hotel lobby and dismissed the team, but Taishi Ito said he had something he wanted to say before we broke off in groups. Taishi, one of three seniors as part of Rev's first recruiting class, thanked coach for following through with all of his promises he had made during the recruiting process. He thanked him for being a great coach, role model, creating a great program, etc. Taishi also thanked Rev, on behalf of the team, for setting up this amazing foreign tour. Rev was getting chocked up a bit at this point, but that's when Taishi brought the hammer down. He said that Rev had one more promise to fulfill and it was very important to everyone... Taishi then pulled out a speedo with the design of the Australian flag and handed it to coach as everyone busted up laughing. Quite a moment. Rev held up his end of the bargain today by 'sporting' the speedo with great pride (and many threats to anyone who dared take a picture). For those with weak stomachs, proceed at your own risk to the photos below (and if I don't make it home, I think you know who the prime suspect in my disappearance would be).
Basketball-wise, tomorrow is our final game and it will be a tough one. Cairns is a legit professional team that is in the middle of its season, having played a league game on Saturday. The local paper prepped our game as something the team is looking forward to. We'll actually get to play in a real arena for the first time this trip and the Pilots are viewing it as a good opportunity. The team will shoot around at the arena tomorrow morning and we are slated for a 7 p.m. tip-off. Check back for updates tomorrow.
Saturday, May 23 (1:46 PM Local): We have arrived at our beautiful hotel in Cairns, which was just over a three-hour flight north up the coastline from Sydney. It is like paradise here: rainforests, blue water lagoons, blue skies. Niedermeyer and Sikma walked through the hotel lobby without shirts on and the bell desk guys said that they would be RED within 20 minutes. The guys will do a mini-scavenger hunt on things in the city this afternoon that Prof McGinty has organized and then they have the night to themselves. Full day tour out on the Great Barrier Reef tomorrow, should be some good photo opportunities.
Friday, May 22 (11:57 PM Local): Below is another slideshow of selected photos from today. We head to the airport tomorrow morning at 6:45 a.m. to catch a flight to Cairns. Two days of tourist stuff and the final game of the trip against the Cairns Marlins, which will be the toughest game of the trip. Cairns was a fixture of the NBL, the top pro league in Australia before it folded last year. Many of their top players have stuck around and are waiting for the league to start back up, so it will be a good test.
Friday, May 22 (9:49 PM Local): FINAL SCORE – Portland 98, Illawarra 75… BOX SCORE
Illawarra played a good game. They had a couple of older fellas that knew how to play as well as a couple of current college players from over in the States. The Hawks held the lead throughout the first quarter before the Pilots took control. Five Pilots were in double figures led by Nik Raivio’s double-double of 15 points and 10 boards. The three-point shots weren’t falling like the first two games, but Portland again used its size and physicality to pull out the win.
Some other quick thoughts on the game:
*The regular arena for Illawarra was getting a makeover, so we played in a matchbox with wood backboards and non breakaway rims (Jasonn had two dunks that I thought might end the game early).
*It was pouring down rain here and the roof was leaking onto the court in a few places… our host, Sean McShane did his best mopping job throughout the action.
*Chris Jackson played well on his home turf, nice to see him again.
*UP women’s basketball player Lauren Angel was also on hand. Lauren lives in Wollongong and was excited to see the boys play.
*#14 on Illawarra was a dead ringer for a young Joel Sobotka (see pictures later).
*One of the three officials had a killer mullet… phenomenal.
*My computer battery was running dead, so I did 4th quarter stats from the doorway to the arena washroom on the baseline (only plugin I could find)… I think I held my own.
Friday, May 22 (3:49 PM Local): We had a blast at the Taronga Zoo this morning/afternoon. Lots of cool exotic animals and a nice ferry ride across the bay from our hotel. I’ll post a photo gallery soon. Getting ready for another bus ride, this time to Wollongong to face the Illawarra Hawks in the ‘Snake Pit.’
Friday, May 22 (9:01 AM Local): We were originally scheduled to go to Manly Beach this morning/afternoon, but with the weather more reminiscent of an early spring Portland day (wet and cloudy), we'll instead head to the local zoo. Everyone is excited to see a platypus. Tonight we play our third of four games, at the 'Snake Pit' against Illawarra. Should be better competition tonight according to our local guide. We then will fly out early tomorrow morning to Cairns, have a day at the Great Barrier Reef on an off day on Sunday and then play the Cairns Marlins Monday night at 7 p.m. (weather in Cairns is supposed to be high-80s). The trip is basically over after that, with a 3 AM wakeup call and day of travel back to the States early Tuesday. This trip is flying by...
Thursday, May 21 (11:32 PM Local): Another photo slideshow is posted below. Today we toured more of Sydney, looked down on the city from its highest tower, ate lunch at Darling Harbour, water-taxied it back to our hotel, ate delicious ice cream at the boys' newest favorite hot spot in Sydney (Copenhagen Ice Cream Stand), got treatment in Rev's room, then took it to the Sharks in Sutherland... Busy Day! Tomorrow it is the Sydney Zoo and then we face Illawara and traitor (just kidding) Chris Jackson!
