ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE
Director of Athletic Performance Bradford Scott coordinates the speed and strength program for the Pilots. Assistant Athletic Performance Coach Catherine Wade was hired during the summer of 2011.
The University recognizes the importance of developing and supporting the strength and conditioning program and the impact it can have on athletic performance and results. As the level of play continues to accelerate throughout college sports, the fiercely competitive nature of Division I sports is demanding a sharp focus on speed, power, agility, strength and endurance – all of which requires thoughtful preparation and thorough training before a player ever steps foot on the field. Athletic departments and coaching staffs across the country are incorporating strength and conditioning into their plans for building a championship program, and Portland is no exception.
Under the direction of the Athletic Performance staff, each member of the Pilots’ team will benefit from individual programs designed to develop the player into a more versatile and well-rounded athlete. The goal is to address individual strengths and weaknesses in order to improve the team’s overall level of sport performance.
The Athletic Performance staff creates, implements, and maintains year-round strength workouts for Portland’s athletic teams. In addition, the coaches assist and consult with the UP athletic training department regarding injury rehabilitation and reconditioning. The staff also oversees the day-to-day operations of the Chiles Center weight room. The weight room is among the largest and most up-to-date in the West Coast Conference. This bright, air-conditioned facility features the latest in machine apparatus and free weights.
Before coming to UP, Scott was at USC as the head strength, speed and conditioning coach for the men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s volleyball programs. Scott worked directly with the Trojans’ 2007 NCAA Sweet 16 basketball team that had two players drafted in the 2007 NBA draft.
Wade spent the previous two years as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Columbia University, where she was responsible for the testing procedures and the strength and conditioning for 11 varsity programs. A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Wade earned a Masters of Science (Exercise Science) from Syracuse University in June of 2008. She was a four-year starting goalkeeper at Oklahoma, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in May of 2005.

Intern Testimonials:
“My internship experience at the University of Portland played a critical role in my development as a sports performance coach. Through both theoretical and practical methods, UP provided structure that was integral to my learning process. They challenged my thinking and pushed me to become a better coach. I take great pride knowing I had the opportunity to work under some of the best coaches in the field.”
— Coach Griffin Waller - Graduate Assistant Stanford University, Sports Performance
“This program spans the division between traditional coursework and being a strength and conditioning coach. From developing your personal brand and coaching voice to being tested in your theory of movement, this program will evolve you. While they do not use this term, Brad and Cat are masters of the ‘zone of proximal development.’ Through their expert guidance the intern/volunteer is perpetually in a place between what they have mastered and what they are unable to do currently, so that they look back and are amazed at how far they have come.”
— Cate DeSutter - Head of Special Projects, Trayn
