4/28/2008 Former University of Portland standout guard Erik Spoelstra was named the head coach of the Miami Heat on Monday, succeeding Pat Riley who retired from the bench but will remain with the franchise in the capacity of team president. Spoelstra, a 1992 graduate of Portland, has served as an assistant coach with the Heat since 1997.

4/16/2008 Junior college All-America point guard T.J. Campbell has signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of Portland and will join the Pilots with two years of eligibility remaining, head coach Eric Reveno announced on Wednesday. Campbell (5-9, 180) played the last two seasons at Glendale Community College (Glendale, Ariz.) and was one of the top prospects out of the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC).

Jamie Zaninovich was introduced as the West Coast Conference Commissioner Sunday as selected by the league’s eight school presidents. Zaninovich, currently the Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Relations at Princeton University, will replace Michael Gilleran who announced in September that he will leave his post on May 31 after 24 years of service in that capacity.
