The University of Portland men’s and women’s cross country teams both earned Team Academic Awards from the USTFCCCA, it was announced on Tuesday. Both squads ranked among the top 50 nationally in average cumulative GPA.

After being named the West Region Coach of the Year and leading the Portland men’s cross country team to a 14th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, Pilots head coach Rob Conner was practicing what he preached on Sunday at the California International Marathon. Conner finished 30th overall and fourth in his age group among a field of over 5,000 runners with a time of 2:39:53, missing his all-time best by only three minutes.

Junior David Kinsella finished in eighth place at the 2007 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Monday, the highest finish for an individual in University of Portland history. Kinsella earned All-America honors for his effort and helped the Pilots to a 14th place team finish.

University of Portland men’s cross country head coach Rob Conner was honored on Friday with the West Region Coach of the Year award, as selected by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Conner guided Portland to a second-place finish behind top-ranked Oregon at the West Regional last weekend to secure the Pilots’ ninth NCAA Championship meet appearance.
