University of Portland standout soccer player Stephanie Cox and University of San Francisco baseball player Tavo Hall have been selected as the 2008 Mike Gilleran West Coast Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year by a vote of the league's Institutional Representatives. The Mike Gilleran WCC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award recognizes the finest accomplishments in athletics, academics, and community service by individuals who have completed their collegiate eligibility.

Keelin Winters was a little under the radar when she began her freshman year at Portland, but appeared in 21 games in 2007 and has become a mainstay with the U-20 Women’s National Team. Coming from a big family, with two sisters and three brothers, Keelin explains how soccer has helped her stand out from the crowd, and how Prison Break and Michael Jackson have helped her through her soccer career.

CHICAGO – U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Pia Sundhage has named the 18-player roster for the 2008 Olympic Team and former University of Portland star Stephanie Cox is among the chosen group. Sundhage made her final selections after the USA’s 1-0 victory over Canada in the 2008 Peace Queen Cup championship game on June 21 in Suwon, South Korea.

University of Portland women’s soccer head coach Garrett Smith has announced that Emma Nelson (Mill Creek, Wash./Archbishop Murphy HS) has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Pilots this fall. Nelson joins the five previously signed incoming freshmen in a class that was ranked No. 7 nationally by Soccer Buzz Magazine.

With the annual NCAA attendance figures announced this spring, Portland is once again unparalleled in fan support. The Pilots led the nation in average attendance after bringing in 3,771 fans per match in 2007. The average established a new school record and is the second most in NCAA women’s soccer history for a single season.
