Redshirt-freshman Milagros Cubelli returns for another year of the women’s tennis blog. Nothing is off limits to ‘The Purple Argentine’ as she delves into all things related to the women’s tennis team (and some things not). Cubelli’s feeling a little more spiritual this week, with the election of a new Pope and all...

I know you guys missed me. I missed you all too. But I am back. I’m back for good.
The season has kept me very busy and, above all, super excited. Our last two wins against Montana and Gonzaga brought some smiles to our faces and we are working really hard to keep the momentum going. We are traveling to play BYU next Wednesday and coming back to play San Diego on Saturday at home.
We spent these last days around campus practicing and working out every morning. The truth is that nothing very special has been happening in the empty Bluff. My teammates keep making fun of my accent (now they laugh because I struggle with the word “Quarter”); Katy keeps tripping and falling; Emily keeps saying OMG every two seconds, and Nastya is still in touch with her Russian mafia. You see? Everything had been more than normal…until yesterday.
HABEMUS PAPEM!!!!!!! I was not really paying attention to this whole Pope election because to be honest, I am more interested in the spiritual part of religions. But I have to say it…the new Pope is from Argentina!!
This brought a lot of repercussions around the world, logically. Even my coach couldn’t dissimulate her state of astonishment: “I can’t believe the new Pope is from Argentina”. I don’t really know what she tried to say but I will take it as a compliment. It was funny that people texted me to congratulate me as if I had done something to help him!! I don’t even remember when was the last time that I went to Church!!
The repercussions in Argentina were huge. Not surprisingly, the first thing that Argentines did was to bring this event to our “Argentine soccer worldview”. Some people started posting pictures like these ones…
Messi, Pope Francis and Maradona…
“The next Sistine Chapel” with Messi and Maradonna
I know, we are not a normal country. Other people used this event to make fun of Brazilians, saying things like “hey we have the Pope, you guys can stay with Pele”. What is more ridiculous is the fact that Brazilian newspapers responded to this situation with headlines like: “They already have Messi….and now the Pope?”.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there are people that actually think that now that the Pope is Argentine we are going to win the next World Cup.
But Argentina was not the only country that related this election with Maradona. Those resentful Englishmen that cannot forget Maradona’s goal (he scored with his hand in a very tricky way and his hand was named “The Hand of God in the World Cup of 1986, published things like this in their newspapers....
Now, seriously, I am glad that the new pope is Francis. It has nothing to do with his nationality but it has to do with his simplicity. At home, everyone could see him taking the bus and walking around the city. He is not a rich person; he lived like an average Argentine his whole life. He cheered for his local soccer team every weekend and wears its jersey, as any Argentine would do.
But most importantly, he will be praying for us in the next World Cup!!!!!!!!!
Cheers,
The purple Argentine
Ps: Francis just called me…he is considering the canonization of Wally…
