The blog is back for another season as the 2012 volleyball team - the VBGs - rotate on filling fans in on life as Portland Pilot student-athletes. Freshman outside hitter Sarah O'Connor takes the second edition of "The Blog", describing life as a frosh as the school year and volleyball season get underway. Entry #1 – Sam Moore (August 20th)
Hey Pilot fans,
It’s one of your favorite freshmen here, Sarah. As Sam filled you in last week you learned there are 2 freshmen, me and Lexi, then our junior transfer Beth! Well it’s that time of the year where Lexi and I get to be the awkward freshmen looking for friends, while upperclassmen glide through the campus without a problem. Not only is it time for awkward social situations but it’s also time for the Pilots to start traveling and playing some matches!
We just got back from the beautiful state of Utah. where we played in the Aggie Invitational. With a solid weekend against talented teams such as Utah State, Utah, Southern Utah, and Weber State we had some stand out players. One being Emily Liger, who came off the bench to rally up kills like a champ. Then the other is Jacky Rodriguez, who ended up getting All-Tournament. She was unstoppable in the back row. But of course they can't do anything without the rest of the pilots who each contributed in amazing ways.
But enough of the volleyball, time to get to the important stuff. Some important things Lexi and I have learn in the last 3 weeks that could be life changing:
One - Ice cream always is better after 9pm and yes it’s ok to get two scoops (you will work it off right?).
Two - Don't worry about how ugly your ID picture is, most likely you will lose it in a week.
Three - Corey can solve any of your problems.
Four - Netflix is your best friend.
Five - Decorating your dorm can be a process that makes you sweat, but completely necessary.
Six - Soccer games will be one of your highlights (and has great popcorn)
Seven - When leaving the locker room always close the door or Rachel will get mad.
And Eight - Never wear ankle socks, only crew socks (Thanks Sam!)
Now, I can spill the beans on my roommate and fellow freshman Alexis Dempsey. Or we like to call her Alexia. Coming from Palm Springs, we have had to work through some changes and make her aware of things like the weather. Like Sam mentioned before she bought her first rain coat! And yes of course it’s was a North Face Shell, which you northwest native know, is a go to/most fashionable statement you can make in the winter. She is also amazed by the amount of blondes she has seen. Well, this is not Cali sweetie, we can't get sun kissed. And with a day trip to Seaside, Lexi was very confused why people were wearing a sweatshirt at the beach. We kindly had to explain that in Oregon, you can't expect to be warm at the beach all the time. Beth struggled this this concept as well. And the last one, why people are so friendly. She is always taken aback when a stranger says hello and asks about her day. Good thing she's a sweet heart and can fit in with the kind people of Portland.
Well that’s all I have time for. Come watch us at home Friday and Saturday at the Nike Portland Invitational where we will be playing Idaho State [Friday, 11:00 a.m.], Tennessee State [Friday, 7:30 p.m.], and UNLV [Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
! Hope to see you there!
Until next time pilot fans,
and remember, Keep Portland Purple
