Portland is currently at the top of the West Coast Conference standings entering this pivotal week of soccer with a 3-0 record in league play. San Diego, which sports a program-best 11-match unbeaten streak, is second with a 2-0-1 record, while No. 12 Santa Clara (10-3-3) is third in the league standings with a 2-1 mark.
Santa Clara owns a 14-10-2 all-time series edge over Portland and the teams have had epic battles throughout both programs’ rise to national prominence. The Pilots defeated Santa Clara in the 2002 NCAA Championship match, a 2-1 overtime victory to give Portland its first ever NCAA title. Santa Clara has since won three of the last five meetings and ousted the Pilots from the 2003 playoffs with a third round, shootout victory at Merlo Field.
The teams have split the last two meetings, with each pulling out a home field win. Santa Clara held on for a 3-2 victory last year at Buck Shaw Stadium, while the Pilots beat the Broncos 3-1 in 2005 at Merlo Field before an announced crowd of 5,119.
