PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland Pilots freshman goalkeeper Austin Guerrero has been named the West Coast Conference men’s soccer co-player of the week after recording two straight shutouts in California during the weekend. Guerrero made six saves in a 1-0 win over San Francisco on Friday and had two stops in a 0-0 draw with Saint Mary’s on Sunday.
Guerrero is tied for the conference lead with four shutouts this season, while his 40 saves are a league-high. The native of Chula Vista, Calif., has not allowed a goal in the last 284 minutes played and has lowered his goals-against average to 0.93. He has played every minute in goal for the Pilots this fall.
Gonzaga keeper Vito Higgins, who also recorded two shutouts this weekend against SMC and USF, was the other co-player of the week. It’s the second straight week that Higgins has shared conference honors with a UP men’s soccer player. Portland senior defender Michael Gavin was named co-player of the week last week after notching the equalizer in a 1-1 tie with Gonzaga on Sept. 29.
Portland next takes the pitch with a pair of WCC games at home this weekend. First, San Diego and Guerrero’s older brother Dustin visit on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. match at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. Dustin Guerrero, a senior midfielder, has a goal and two assists for the Toreros this season. On Sunday, the Pilots host the LMU Lions at 2:00 p.m.
