SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- After capturing its 10th West Coast Conference title, the University of Portland was well represented when the WCC released its 2008 all-conference team on Wednesday. Senior midfielder Megan Rapinoe was named the WCC Player of the Year, Danielle Foxhoven earned league freshman of the year honors, and Garrett Smith was named the WCC Coach of the Year.

10 Pilots in all received WCC recognition, the most of any conference school. Rapinoe and Foxhoven were joined by sophomore striker Sophie Schmidt on the All-WCC First Team.

Kelsey Davis, Michelle Enyeart and Elli Reed each earned second team honors, while Charney Burk, Michelle Olivier, Jessica Tsao and Keelin Winters were honorable mention.

Foxhoven, Burk and Olivier also garnered WCC All-Freshman Team honors.

After missing most of the last two seasons due to injury, Rapinoe stormed back with four goals and a conference-best 10 assists this year as the league’s top playmaker. She is the seventh Pilot in WCC history to earn the league’s player of the year award, following former UP standouts Angie Woznuk (2007), Christine Sinclair (2005, 04, 02), Erin Misaki (2000), Justi Baumgardt (1996), Shannon MacMillan (1995, 93), and Tiffeny Milbrett (1994, 92).

Foxhoven is the 10th Pilot overall and fourth consecutive to be named the WCC Freshman of the Year. She follows teammates Keelin Winters (2007), Michelle Enyeart (2006) and Megan Rapinoe (2005), as well as former UP standouts Lindsey Huie (2002), Christine Sinclair (2001), Michelle French (1995), Holly Pierce (1994), Justi Baumgardt (1993), and Shannon MacMillan (1992).

For leading the Pilots to their league-high 10th conference championship, Smith was awarded his third WCC Coach of the Year honor. He previously earned the conference’s top coaching honor in 2005 and 2007.

Portland opens the 2008 NCAA postseason on Friday by hosting Northern Arizona on Friday at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. and the winner advances to play the Texas-Washington State winner in a second-round game on Sunday at 1 p.m., also hosted by the Pilots.
