PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland Pilots freshman goalkeeper Austin Guerrero has been summoned to the U.S. U-20 National Team training camp, which is slated for Feb. 19-24 in New Orleans, La. Fresh off a quarterfinal showing at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, the squad is already preparing for the 2009 U-20 World Cup in Egypt.
Guerrero is one of two goalies invited to the camp and is among 23 players total. The U-20’s are coached by Thomas Rongen, who has coached the team since 2006.
“I cannot put into words the amount of excitement that I have for the upcoming camp,” Guerrero said. “I want to thank all of my coaches and teammates that have worked with me this year and in the past that have helped me land this great opportunity.”
In his first season on The Bluff, Guerrero led the West Coast Conference with eight shutouts, tied for the league-high with 85 saves, posted a 0.98 goals against average and went through a stretch of 435 consecutive minutes played without allowing a goal. The native of Chula Vista, Calif., was named to Soccer America’s All-Freshman team and landed on the All-WCC First Team, the conference all-freshman team and Top Drawer Soccer’s All-Rookie Team.
