TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --- The No. 8 University of Portland men’s cross country team placed fourth in the White Race at the 2009 Pre-Nationals Invitational, hosted by Indiana State on Saturday at LaVern Gibson Championship Course. Four Pilot harriers finished among the top 31 individually as the Pilots as a team finished behind three programs ranked in the top six nationally.
Sophomore Alfred Kipchumba’s eighth place showing paced the Pilots. Freshman Joash Osoro continued his impressive start with a 15th place finish, while senior Tommy Betterbed and freshman Trevor Dunbar finished 25th and 31st, respectively. Redshirt freshman Jared Bassett rounded out the scoring for Portland in 132nd place. Sophomore Matt Frerker placed 158th, while junior Robert Cosby did not finish.
No. 1 Stanford won the White Race with 47 points. No. 4 Colorado (130), No. 6 BYU (163), No. 8 Portland (211) and No. 12 Iona (218) rounded out the top five of the 35-team field.
The Blue Race, featuring 34 teams, was won by the University of Oregon.
Portland’s varsity squad will next run as a team at the 2009 NCAA West Regional on Nov. 14 at Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ore. Portland’s ‘B’ team at the Beaver Classic on Oct. 24 in Corvallis and at the West Coast Conference Championships Oct. 31 in Belmont, Calif.
