PORTLAND, Ore. --- Banner Schafer (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis HS) has committed to the University of Portland men’s soccer team and will join the roster next fall. Schafer joins six other incoming freshmen and transfer Connor Barbaree to bring the total number of newcomers to eight in 2010.
“Banner is a hard-working forward who loves to score goals,” said UP assistant coach Rob Baarts. “We look for him to be the type of forward that defenders hate to mark.”
Schafer (6-0, 155), who was named First Team All-Mid-Willamette Conference and first team all-state as a senior this past fall, is a three-year letterwinner for the Spartans. Schafer, who also earned second team all-conference as a junior and honorable mention as a sophomore, helped the Spartans win the 2009 Oregon 5A State Title. He scored 21 goals and handed out seven assists en route to the title, while helping Corvallis finish on top of the conference as well. He also nabbed the Greater Corvallis Rotary Outstanding Athlete Award and he was named team captain.
Schafer reached the state semifinals with his club team in both 2007 and 2008.
