CORVALLIS, Ore. --- The tenth-ranked Oregon State Beavers snapped Portland’s eight-game winning streak with a 9-2 win over the Pilots on Tuesday night at Goss Stadium. The winning streak was the longest for UP since the Pilots also won eight in a row during the 1991 season.
It looked good early for the Pilots on Tuesday as Portland (18-7) struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With runners on first and third and two outs, sophomore DH Beau Fraser came through with an RBI single to center field that brought home sophomore SS Kris Kauppila.
But it was all Oregon State (19-6) after that as the Beavers responded with a run in the first, another in the third, two more in the fourth and one during each the fifth and seventh innings to claim a 6-1 lead.
The Pilots had a chance to cut into the 6-1 deficit when they loaded the bases with one out to chase OSU starter Ryan Gorton in the top of the eighth inning. But reliever Kevin Rhoderick struck out both Fraser and senior OF Austin Pearce to end the threat.
The Beavs then added three more runs in the bottom of the frame to put the game out of reach.
Portland used eight pitchers during the game, with freshman Matt McCallister (0-1) getting saddled with the loss. He relieved starter Ed Wakefield with one out in the third inning before giving up the go-ahead run.
In all, the Beaver bats touched UP pitchers for 12 hits, while the Pilots countered with six. UP’s six hits came from six different players. Rob Folsom lead the OSU offense with four hits and three RBI’s.
Gorton was solid on the mound and improves to a perfect 3-0 on the year. He allowed just the one unearned run on five hits and three walks, while striking out four in 7.0 innings.
Rhoderick was charged with a Portland run in the ninth, which came on a double play after junior Kyle Haskin had led off with a triple. Haskin’s triple is Portland’s league-high 13th of the season.
UP next returns to Joe Etzel Field and opens a seven-game home stretch with a West Coast Conference series against the Saint Mary’s Gaels this weekend. The Pilots, who are 3-0 in the WCC for the first time ever, open the three-game set at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
