MAYAGUEZ, P.R. --- Portland women’s basketball player Natalie Day poured in 17 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for the U.S. Virgin Islands in the bronze medal game against Jamaica at the 2010 Central America and Caribbean Games. The junior-to-be also had five assists against the Jamaicans, who claimed the bronze with a 69-58 win.
Day, a wing, helped lead the U.S. Virgin Islands to a 2-2 overall record and a fourth-place finish. She was also in the top-10 in both scoring and rebounding at the CAC Games, while notching a pair of double-doubles.
“Overall it was a great experience and I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” said Day. “It really opened my eyes to a different style of basketball, and it gave me a new outlook for the upcoming season.”
Day, whose mother was born and raised on the Virgin Island of St. Thomas, was a key player for the Pilots as a sophomore last season after transferring to The Bluff from Howard University. The native of Germantown, Md., was second on the team in scoring with an 11.2 per game mark, while averaging 4.3 rebounds per contest. She scored in double figures 17 times and poured in a career-high 28 points during a win at Pepperdine on Jan. 23.
Day and the Pilots will begin their quest for a third straight trip to the post-season when they open the 2010-11 campaign at Boise State on Nov. 12.
