Scouting Oregon
The Ducks (4-4-2) dropped a 2-1 decision at No. 10 Santa Clara last weekend in their only match of the week. After surrendering two goals in the first 50 minutes, Oregon scored on senior F Jen Stoltenberg’s team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 54th minute. The Ducks out-shot the Broncos 12-9 for the match. Stoltenberg has four assists to go with her seven goals. Junior Cody Miles has been the primary goalkeeper for UO and posts a 0.85 goals-against average. Head coach Tara Erickson is in her sixth year at the helm of Oregon, while former Pilot standout and assistant coach Lauren Hanson joined the Ducks staff as the associate head coach prior to the 2009 season. Portland owns a 15-2-3 all-time series record against the Ducks and are 12-0 against Oregon since the program was re-instated in 1996. The Pilots opened the 2009 season with a 3-0 win at Oregon in the last meeting between the two teams.
Scouting Washington
The Huskies (7-2-1) are ranked No. 20 according to this week’s TopDrawerSoccer.com rankings and enter the weekend riding a three-match winning streak. Last week, UW knocked off a pair of WCC opponents on the road with wins at Saint Mary’s (3-1) and San Francisco (2-0). The two Husky losses this year came at Boston (3-0) and versus Rutgers (1-0) at the Nike Portland Invitational. UW also tied Wisconsin at home. Junior MF Kate Deines leads UW with six goals on the season, while 11 other players have scored goals. Senior Jorde LaFontain-Kussman has been the main goalkeeper and posts a 0.85 goals-against average and two shutouts. Head coach Lesle Gallimore is in her 17th season at Washington and posts a career record of 176-135-25 and has led the Huskies to nine NCAA Tournament appearances. Portland leads the all-time series with UW by a 25-6-1 margin. The Pilots have won 10 of the last 11 meetings, including five in a row. Last year Portland took a 2-0 decision in Seattle.
Last Week
The Pilots split a difficult Bay Area road trip with a 3-1 win at No. 16 California followed by a 2-1 loss to No. 2 Stanford. After surrendering an early goal to the Golden Bears, the Pilots dominated the second half and scored three unanswered goals by Cloee Colohan, Sophie Schmidt and Halley Kreminski for the win. Saturday at Stanford, the Pilots went down 2-0 at the half and again came back strong in the second period. Danielle Foxhoven cut the deficit in half in the 80th minute, but the Pilots ran out of time in their bid for another comeback.
Home Sweet Home
The home field advantage at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex over the years has been quite apparent. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this season, Portland posts a 194-20-7 (.894) home record at Merlo Field and is currently riding a 30-match winning streak on its home pitch. The team is off to a 6-0 start this year at the friendly confines of Merlo Field.
Starting Lineups
With a talented seven-player freshman class and a rash of early season injuries, the Pilots have used seven different starting lineups through the first 11 games. A total of 18 different players have started at least one game already this year. Only five Pilots have started all 11 matches: seniors Sophie Schmidt, Keelin Winters, Elli Reed and Jessica Tsao, as well as redshirt freshman Cloee Colohan. Six different freshmen have also earned starts this season.
Schmidt Reaches Career Scoring Milestones
Senior MF Sophie Schmidt tallied an assist on Sept. 12 versus Penn State to become the seventh player in school history with at least 30 goals and 30 assists. She joins Christine Sinclair, Tiffeny Milbrett, Shannon MacMillan, Justi Baumgardt, Lindsey Huie and Michelle Enyeart as members of the 30/30 club. The assist also marked the 100th point of Schmidt’s career. The Abbotsford, B.C. native is currently eighth in UP history with 102 points (36g, 30a).
Foxhoven Climbing Career Scoring Charts
Junior striker Danielle Foxhoven has already racked up 110 career points (44g, 22a) and is tied for sixth on UP’s career scoring list. She trails Justi Baumgardt (1993, 95-97) by 14 points for fifth place. Foxhoven is sixth in total goals and is two shy of cracking UP’s all-time top 5.
Rankings Update
Portland dropped one spot to No. 3 in the NSCAA/HendrickCars.com College Rankings this week. The Pilots also fell to No. 3 according to Soccer America and Soccer Times, while holding steady at No. 4 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com rankings.
Attendance Records
The Pilots are off to a fast start with home attendance in 2010, averaging 3,411 fans through the first six games. Portland has led the nation in average attendance five years in a row after averaging 3,472 fans per game in 2009. A total of 11 of Portland’s 13 home games last year eclipsed 3,000 fans, including a sold crowd of 5,068 for the home-opener versus California.
Portland established a new single-season total attendance record for women’s soccer (47,082) in 2008 and led the nation in average attendance the previous three seasons as well: 3,403 in 2005, 3408 in 2006 and 3,771 in 2007. The average attendance in 2007 established a new school record and is the second most in NCAA women’s soccer history for a single season. Only North Carolina’s 2001 average of 3,983 was higher. Portland was the first program to ever eclipse 40,000 fans in a season during its run to the 2005 championship.
Fearless Freshmen
A promising group of seven freshmen joined the 2010 roster and head coach Garrett Smith has seen immediate returns from his newest players. Forward Micaela Capelle leads the team with six goals and 13 total points. Goalkeeper Erin Dees has started eight matches and has four shutouts. Midfielder Michelle Cruz has started five games and recorded her first career goal on Sept. 12 versus Penn State. Ellen Parker has started five of the last six games as the attacking midfielder, while Sarah Bridges has four starts and assisted on the only goal in Portland’s 1-0 win over No. 6 Texas A&M on Sept. 17.
