PORTLAND, Ore. --- Redshirt-junior Owen Jones tossed 6.0 scoreless innings of relief and the Portland Pilots capitalized on an seventh inning error to score four runs en route to a 5-0 victory over the Seattle Redhawks Friday afternoon. The game, which had been suspended on Thursday in the middle of the third inning with Portland leading 1-0, was the first of two games to be played at Joe Etzel Field on Friday.
Portland (9-10) chased Seattle (9-8) starter Seafth Howe in the bottom of the seventh after Matt Mardesich drew a one out walk. One out later, sophomore Brian Frattali reached on an error to extend the Pilots inning and Portland capitalized. With the bases loaded, junior Kris Kauppila sent a groundball into right field to score Mardesich and Frattali. Senior Kevin Armijo followed with a base hit to right field on the very next pitch to score Colin Feldtman and Kauppila.
Jones (2-2), making his first appearance out of the bullpen this season, struck out four in 6.0 innings of scoreless relief. The Pilot righty needed just 73 pitches to complete the game, allowing three hits and one walk to pick up the victory. Chris Johnson held Seattle to one run in 3.0 innings of work on Thursday prior to the game’s suspension.
Seattle took a different approach with their pitcher utilization. The Redhawks trotted Howe (3-1) back onto the mound after Howe had thrown the first 2.0 innings on Thursday. Howe worked quite efficiently in his return to the mound, throwing a total of 6.1 innings in the game. He allowed two runs – one earned – on three hits while striking out two and walking one. He retired 13 of the 15 Pilots he faced on Friday including the first eight.
Portland and Seattle are currently in the midst of the second game. Portland called on lefty Keeler Brynteson (0-0, 4.32 ERA) to take rubber for his first start of the season while Seattle countered with right-hander Arlo Evasick (0-1, 3.60 ERA). The recap for the second game will be posted after it's conclusion.
