Pilot Fans –
It was a tough weekend on the road; we lost both of our games bringing our record to 2-3. On Friday we lost to Seattle University after they got two first half goals that we were unable to respond to. Then, on Sunday we outplayed Boston University, but we were unable to put away some goals as we lost 2-0.
After our game on Sunday, our team got Jimmy Johns for lunch. For those of you that do not know, Jimmy Johns is a sub place that is comparable to Subway or Quiznos. As the menu was going around the team, I was shocked by how long it was taking my teammates to choose a sub. Like most sub places, I assumed that everyone would have their go-to sandwich memorized. I was shocked when I learned that I was one of the few on the team that actually knew what Jimmy Johns was and had eaten there before. Being from the Midwest, where Jimmy Johns is very prevalent, I knew what I wanted and was able to make my order very quickly. This occurrence was another reminder of how our team is full of people from different places who bring to the team many different ways of talking, vocabulary, and favorite places to eat.
Everyone on the team has a favorite restaurant that they were disappointed to find out does not exist in Portland. I personally was very sad to hear that there are no Steak N’ Shakes in Portland, Kassi misses Pei Wei, Meesh loves In N’ Out, Malloy likes Anthony’s, and Hailee is a fan of Café Rio.
As far as speech goes, one does not have to search for long to find some differences, for example Amanda Frisbie who is the lone Texan on the team. I have heard her say “y’all” more than I have ever heard it said before. Sarah says “bag” weird, but I do not think that is because she is from Portland, so I have no idea where she got that from. And for those of you that were wondering if I have the typical Chicago accent I am sorry to disappoint, but after saying “Chicago” about a hundred times I was told that I do not.
My favorite vocabulary difference happens to come up every once in a while in an ongoing argument I have with my roommate Nichole. The question we continually try to find an agreeable answer to is, “Is a Pepsi (and all other drinks like it) a ‘pop’ or a ‘soda’?” I continue to inform her that it is a pop, but every time she argues that it is called soda. With minimal evidence to support our statements we always end up just accepting that the other person wrong. But even Micaela agrees with me that it is called pop, so I think the whole soda thing is a Southern California thing. (Editor's Note: CLICK HERE for a map showing the regional breakdown of the Pop vs. Soda debate in the U.S.)
After three road games, it will be good to get back to Merlo this weekend to host our Nike Invitational Tournament. This Friday we will be playing the Huskies of Washington University at 7 in a rematch of last year’s second round NCAA game. We will then turn around and play Oregon State University on Sunday at 2:30.
Until next time,Erin Dees
