PORTLAND, Ore. --- Devlyn Jeter (Sacramento, Calif./Rosemont HS), a 6-0 forward, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play women’s soccer at the University of Portland, announced head coach Garrett Smith. Jeter joins
Haylee DeGrood,
Noelle LaPrevotte and
Shelby Vaver to round-out Portland’s 2012 recruiting class.
“DJ is the type of player that will immediately catch your eye just by her presence on the field,” said Smith. “She’s very athletic. We have seen her play from the high school level to the national team level, covering almost every position on the field. With that type of versatility, we’re excited to see where she fits on Merlo Field.”
Jeter (pronounced jet-er) helped the Rosemont Wolverines claim a league co-championship in 2009 and advance to the state playoffs three consecutive years. A team MVP, Jeter is a two-time selection to the Sac-Joaquin Section All-City First Team.
“I’m very excited to sign with the University of Portland,” said Jeter. “I’ve known Lisa (assistant coach Lisa Sari) for a while, so that helped knowing she was there.”
Jeter plays for the ODP State Team and the ODP Regional squad, and she was a member of the National Team Pool in 2011. She was named the MVP of the state team in 2009, and she was a five-year team captain for her Elk Grove Club team.
Former Portland standouts Megan and Rachael Rapinoe and Stephanie Cox also played for Elk Grove.
“It felt good to know that there were other players from Elk Grove that went to UP,” noted Jeter. “They all had a major impact on the program, and hopefully I can do the same thing.”
A Brief Q&A with Devlyn Jeter
What are some of the things that attracted you to UP?
- It’s a smaller school that I’ve known about for a while. It kind of felt like it could be my home away from home. I am really comfortable there, and I’m happy and excited.
What are you looking forward to most at Portland?
- Pretty much everything. I’m excited to finally be away from home on my own and to have the opportunity to grow. I’m also excited to play on Merlo Field.
What do you think playing on Merlo Field for the first time will be like?
- I’m probably going to be really nervous but excited. I like going to the games there in front of all the people under the lights, so I’m really, really excited.
What are you hoping to accomplish at UP?
- Of course I want to help the team win another national championship. But I also just want to have fun, play hard and be a fierce competitor to help the program win.
