PORTLAND, Ore. --- The No. 21 Oregon State Beavers scored four early runs and would hold on for a 5-0 win over the Portland Pilots in a non-conference baseball game played on Monday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. The loss drops Portland’s overall record to 20-11, while the Beavers improve to 24-11.
After scoring one run in the top of the first inning off of UP starter Jeremy Burright (0-1), Oregon State’s Jake Rodriguez gave the Beavers some breathing room in the second when he hit a three-run home run over the left field wall.
The four-run cushion was enough for OSU starter Dan Child (4-2), who cruised through 7.1 innings. Child scattered six hits, didn’t issue a walk and fanned nine.
Burright takes the loss after throwing 2.0 innings. J.R. Bunda took the mound to start the third and would hold the OSU bats in check. Bunda struck out three in 4.0 scoreless innings. Brandon Snyder and Chad Kjemhus each followed with a scoreless inning of relief, while the Beavers added an insurance run in the ninth off of Kurt Yinger.
Portland had a good chance to get on the board in the sixth inning when Chet Thompson and Caleb Whalen led off the frame with back-to-back singles. A fielder’s choice then made it runners on the corners and one out, and the Beavers would then end the threat with a big 5-4-3 double play.
Brian Fratalli nearly homered for the Pilots in the second inning, but his double to left-center field missed going over the walk by just a couple of feet.
Matt Boyd threw an inning of scoreless relief for Oregon State, while Tony Bryant retired the only two batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth inning.
OSU out-hit Portland 10-6, and the Beavers committed the game’s only error.
The Pilots next head south to Salem for a non-conference game against the Oregon Ducks at Volcanoes Stadium on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
