CORVALLIS, Ore. --- After the Portland Pilots claimed an early lead, the No. 20 Oregon State Beavers scored 10 unanswered runs en route to a 12-4 win in a non-conference baseball game played at Goss Stadium on Tuesday night. The loss drops Portland’s overall record to 25-19, while OSU improves to 33-17.
The Beavers scored a pair of runs off of UP starter Kody Watts in the bottom of the first inning, but the Pilots responded with four runs in the top of the second to jump ahead 4-2. After Michael Lucarelli drove in Portland’s first run with a single, Bo Cornish hit a two-run, go-ahead double to left field, handing the Pilots a 3-2 lead. Cornish would then advance to third on a ground-out before scoring on a passed ball to push the lead to two runs.
But Oregon State wasted little time to respond, answering with five runs in the bottom half of the frame. With the bases loaded, the Beavers drew consecutive walks to score two and tie the score at 4-4. Kavin Keyes then greeted new Portland pitcher J.R. Bunda with a three-run double, making it a 7-4 game in OSU’s favor.
From there, the Beavers would hold the Pilots scoreless, while adding three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and two more in the eighth.
Watts (2-3) takes the loss after lasting just 1.2 innings. Keeler Brynteson and Chad Kjemhus followed Bunda out of the UP bullpen.
The Pilots chased OSU starter Taylor Starr after 3.1 innings, but Scott Schultz (3-0) was effective out of the bullpen, working 4.2 scoreless innings. He allowed just one base runner, while striking out a pair. Dylan Davis tossed a scoreless ninth.
Oregon State out-hit Portland 12-7 on the night. Lucarelli, Cornish and Sam Westendorf each finished with two hits for the Pilots.
Portland next plays its second straight Pac-12 opponent on the road as the Pilots travel to Seattle, Wash., to face the Washington Huskies on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. at Husky Ballpark.
