SEATTLE, Wash. --- Portland junior Steven Evans had a first-half hat-trick, but the Seattle Redhawks would ultimately prevail 4-3 over the Pilots in a non-conference men’s soccer match at the Husky Classic at Championship Field on Friday afternoon. It’s the first career hat-trick for Evans, who leads the West Coast Conference with seven goals.
The game featured a wild beginning as each team scored twice during the first 12 minutes. The Redhawks (2-4-0) tallied the first two goals, with Miguel Gonzalez making it 1-0 in SU’s favor in the fifth minute. Austin Sweeney was responsible for Seattle’s next goal, which came only 20 seconds later and handed the Redhawks the early two-goal advantage.
But the Pilots (2-3-1) were unfazed as they quickly responded. In the 10th minute, Michael Escobar swung a cross into the area, where Evans was able to finish past the keeper and pull Portland within a goal. Evans again found the back of the net three minutes later when he converted a PK, tying the score at 2-2.
From there the game settled down a bit, until the two sides exchanged goals just before the end of the first half. This time it was Seattle who had an answer after Evans notched the hat-trick with a goal in the 39th minute. Marshall Kosaka followed Evans’ unassisted goal with the equalizer, sending the Pilots and Redhawks into the locker room tied at 3-3.
The second half remained scoreless and appeared destined for overtime until Kosaka scored his second goal of the game, which proved to be the game-winner in the 84th minute.
The game featured 42 total shots, as the Redhawks out-shot the Pilots 22-20.
The Pilots next conclude their stay in Seattle with a game against No. 21 Brown on Sunday at Husky Soccer Stadium on the University of Washington campus. Kick-off for Portland’s second and final game of the Husky Classic is set for 3 p.m.
