PORTLAND, Ore. --- The accolades continue to roll in for Portland junior midfielder Steven Evans, who was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Month on Wednesday. Evans has earned both WCC Player of the Week awards so far this season, and he leads the league with four goals.
Evans’ four goals, including a spectacular game-winner, helped the Pilots post a 2-1-0 record during the month of August. His first two goals came during a 4-0 win at Cal State Fullerton on Aug. 26. He totaled six shots against the Titans and four shots on-goal en route to earning the first WCC Player of the Week Award of the 2012 season.
The Portland native then scored the equalizer and the game-winner on Friday night as the Pilots came from behind to defeat the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners 2-1 at the 2012 Nike Portland Invitational at Merlo Field. Evans was named the Invitational’s Offensive MVP and the Pilots were co-champs with Washington.
Evans scored both goals against the Roadrunners in the second half, with the game-winner coming in the 78th minute. Ricardo Carrillo made a short pass to Evans, who took a touch before burying a world class shot into the upper left corner of the net from 30 yards out.
Evans and the Pilots are on the road this weekend as they’ll face Evansville and Bradley at the ProRehab Aces Classic in Evansville, Ind. Portland will face Evansville at 5:30 p.m. (Pacific) on Friday before playing Bradley at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
