PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland sophomore right-hander Kurt Yinger, who had a stretch of 27.0 straight scoreless innings, is the U.S. Bank University of Portland Student Athlete of the Month for March. Yinger went 2-0 during the month, registered his first career complete game shutout and registered the sixth longest consecutive scoreless innings streak in the nation this season.
The native of Camas, Wash., boasted an ERA of 2.52, fanned 32 in 39.1 innings, walked just four and held opposing hitters to a .245 batting average.
During a no-decision against Seattle on March 9, Yinger tossed 9.0 scoreless innings of three-hit ball and fanned eight as the Pilots would go on to win 1-0 in 10 innings. He sat down 14 straight between the second and seventh innings and had retired 19 of 20 at one point as well. Yinger was perhaps even better a week later when he struck out a career-high 12 and went the distance for a 2-0 win over UC Riverside. He scattered just six hits and did not issue a single walk.
Yinger’s lengthy scoreless innings streak finally came to an end at San Francisco on March 23, but he still notched the W as the Pilots won 5-1. He went 7.2 innings in that one, allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out six.
He was named the WCC Rawlings Pitcher of the Week on March 18 following his complete-game performance against Riverside.
