PORTLAND, Ore. --- Friday’s West Coast Conference baseball game between the Portland Pilots and Gonzaga Bulldogs at Joe Etzel Field was suspended in the top of the fourth inning with the score tied 3-3 because of rain. The game will resume on Saturday at 11 a.m. from where it was halted.
The Pilots and Bulldogs will then play game two of the series following the conclusion of game one.
The series finale is still scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
Gonzaga jumped out to an early lead on Friday, scoring twice in the top of the first inning without registering a hit. After two hit batters and a sacrifice bunt, GU’s first run scored on a grounder from Steven Halcomb. Caleb Wood then trotted home with second run on a pick-off play.
The Bulldogs then got a pair of doubles from Cory Lebrum and Marco Gonzales in the top of the third to claim a 3-0 lead.
The Pilots then got on the board in the bottom of the third when Caleb Whalen drilled a two-run single to left field that pulled Portland within 3-2. Whalen advanced to second base on the throw home before scoring the tying run on a double off the bat of Kramer Scott.
GU starter Marco Gonzales was finally able to get out of the inning after that before the tarp went on the field and the game was suspended.
