PORTLAND, Ore. --- Incoming women’s soccer freshmen Ellie Boon (U.S. U-18), Danica Evans (U.S. U-18) Parkes Kendrick (Canadian U-20) and Allison Wetherington (U.S. U-20) have each spent time with their respective national teams recently, while Wetherington is currently in Sweden as the United States prepares for upcoming qualifying for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
U.S. U-20 WNT head coach and University of Portland Athletics Hall of Fame member Michelle French called in Wetherington as one of 20 players for the trip that will see the U.S. play Sweden’s U-20 Women’s National Team on Friday and Sweden’s U-23 squad on Sunday. Both games will be played in Gavle, which is situated on the east coast of Sweden about 125 miles north of Stockholm.
Boon and Evans were both called in to the U.S. U-18 Women’s National Team Camp in late April, which took place at The Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. Boon and Evans were two of 24 players called up by U.S. Soccer Women’s Technical Director April Heinrichs with an eye on the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Evans is currently the ECNL’s national leader with an astonishing 35 goals.
Kendrick, a Portland native whose parents are Canadian, took part in a five-day training camp in Morgantown, W.V., from May 15-19. The camp is part of Canada WNT's EXCELeration program, which helps identify potential National Team members and is used to bridge the gap from the U-20 level to the senior program.
Boon, Evans, Kendrick and Wetherington are all part of the incoming freshman class for Portland, which was ranked fifth in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer.com.
