PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Brigham Young Cougars finished with a game-ending 10-0 run and overcame big nights from Portland seniors Kari Luttinen, Cassandra Brown and Jasmine Wooton to escape the Chiles Center with an 83-79 win over the Pilots in West Coast Conference women's basketball action played on Monday night. Luttinen poured in 22 points, Brown finished with 21 and Wooton just missed a double-double with 18 points and nine assists during the loss.
After the Pilots (2-11, 0-2 WCC) led for almost the entire night and seemingly had an answer for every BYU (9-4, 1-1 WCC) run, the Cougars scored the game's final 10 points after trailing by six points with 2:04 remaining. Morgan Bailey, who finished the night with 31 points, had a pair of lay-ups down the stretch, Kylie Maeda hit a clutch three-pointer and Lexi Eaton made just enough free throws in the closing 30 seconds to secure the win.
BYU also forced some costly turnovers in the closing moments and Eaton grabbed a key offensive rebound on missed free throw with 23 seconds showing on the clock.
Otherwise the Pilots played perhaps their best all-around game of the season. Portland shot 51.8 percent (29-for-56) on the night and claimed a 12-point lead early in the second half. It was a traditional three-point play by Brown that gave the Pilots that lead, which was followed moments later by a lay-up from Wooton to answer a BYU bucket.
Then after the Cougars cut into the deficit, Luttinen drilled a three-pointer to make it 49-38 in Portland's favor with 17:04 left to play. The Cougars would remain within reach following the Luttinen three, but Brown again pushed the lead to double digits with a three of her own that gave the Pilots a 75-65 lead with 5:48 remaining.
BYU then climbed within six before Wooton hit a pair of free throws to push the UP lead back to eight points. Wooton would score Portland's final points of the night with two more free throws about a minute later to make it 79-73 with just 2:04 showing on the clock. That's when the Cougars would embark on their game-clinching run.
Wooton finished a perfect 10-for-10 on free throws and the nine assists are a career-high. Brown scores at least 20 points for the second straight game and for the sixth time on the year. Luttinen was three of four from three-point range and was 9-for-14 overall.
Cassandra Thompson had a big first half with nine points and she finished with a team-best seven boards. Her nine points helped the Pilots take a 37-28 lead into the locker room at half.
Bailey registered a double-double with 31 points and 11 rebounds.
BYU shot 65 percent in the second half and 44.4 percent (28-for-63) overall. Both teams hit eight three-pointers and the Cougars were 19 of 31 from the foul line, while the Pilots shot 13-for-16 at the stripe.
BYU also committed just seven turnovers to Portland's 13, and the Cougars claimed a 38-32 edge on the glass.
The Pilots next hit the road for a date at Gonzaga in a WCC game next Saturday afternoon. Tip-off at the McCarthey Center in Spokane, Wash., is set for 2 p.m.
