LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- After the Portland Pilots tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh inning, UCLA's Shane Ziele hit a game-winning, RBI double in the bottom of the 11th to hand the No. 12 Bruins a 4-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Portland (1-2) won Friday's opener, but the Bruins (2-1) bounced back to take two of three from the Pilots.
With the game tied 3-3, the Pilots were able to get a runner on base during the ninth and 10th innings, but were ultimately unable to score. Then in the bottom of the 11th, UCLA's Brian Carroll led off with a single. A sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk later, Ziele stepped up to the plate and sent the game-winning double down the down the left field line.
Portland's Colin Feldtman (0-1) takes the loss after tossing 2.0 innings of relief. Feldtman, who was the fifth pitcher of the day for the Pilots, struck out one and did retire the Bruins in order during the bottom of the 10th.
Peter Berg (1-0) worked 4.0 innings of relief for UCLA to earn the win. He held the Pilots scoreless, allowed just one hit and struck out three.
Extra innings were needed after the Pilots rallied from two down with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. After Portland's first two batters were retired, Grant Taylor kept the inning going by drawing a walk. Bo Cornish then took full advantage by lacing a double to left field, which brought Taylor all the way around to score.
Chet Thompson then tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single.
The Pilots scored the game's first run for the third straight time against the defending national champions. In the top of the third, Cornish was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Thompson and then advanced to third courtesy a wild pitch. The senior catcher then trotted home when Cody Lenahan lined out to right field, giving Portland a 1-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived, however, as UCLA plated a pair in the bottom of the frame. The damage was minimized though by Kurt Yinger, Portland's starting pitcher. After Christoph Bono and Carroll each scored the tying and go-ahead runs, the Bruins loaded the bases with only one out.
Yinger then got Gallagher to pop out to the shortstop and Chris Keck to fly out to center to end the inning and the threat.
An inning later, Bono again scored and again the Bruins loaded the bases, now leading 3-1. This time with two outs, Yinger escaped the jam with a fielder's choice off the bat of Ziele.
Yinger was touched for three runs on six hits in 4.0 innings. Freshman Austin Kelly was solid in relief, striking out one and yielding just one hit in 2.0 scoreless innings. Relievers Brandon Snyder and Jackson Lockwood also held the UCLA offense in check.
UCLA starter Cody Poteet lasted just 4.1 innings, while reliever Max Schuh escaped a bases loaded, one out jam in the top of the fifth.
Portland next travels to Moraga, Calif., for a tournament hosted by Saint Mary's next week. The Pilots begin their stay in the Bay Area with a game on Thursday against Kansas State at 10 a.m.
