Box Score I
Box Score (pdf)EUGENE, Ore. --- Portland junior Caleb Whalen had a three-run homer and drove in six runs, but it wasn't enough as the No. 25 Oregon Ducks prevailed 15-10 over the Pilots in a non-conference baseball game played on Tuesday night at PK Park. Whalen's six RBI's are tied for the fourth most RBI's in a game in program history.
It's also the most RBI's by a Pilot since 2009, when Garrett Queen accomplished that feat against Hawai'i.
But the night belonged to the Ducks (23-10), who scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and claimed a 12-0 lead after two innings. Mitchell Tolman batted twice during the first, notching an RBI single both times, Kyle Garlick had a two-run double and Aaron Payne had an RBI triple.
Shaun Chase had the big hit in the second inning, which was a two-run homer to left.
The Pilots (7-26) got on the board in the top of third when Whalen belted his team-leading fourth home run of the season over the wall in left-center field. The blast came with two runners on. A few batters later with the bases loaded, Ryan Littlefield picked up an RBI by getting plunked by a pitch.
The Ducks though responded with two more runs in the third.
Whalen registered another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning and he hit a two-run double in the top of the ninth, helping Portland score four in the final inning. Littlefield and Turner Gill also claimed RBI's in the ninth, courtesy a single and a sacrifice fly, respectively, before Oregon was able to record the final out.
Portland starter Austin Kelly (1-5) takes the loss after recording just one out in the first inning. Brandon Snyder and Kurt Yinger were effective out of the bullpen, combining to hold the Ducks to just one run during the final 6.0 innings. Snyder tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, striking out four.
Oregon reliever Stephen Nogosek (1-1), who was one of four pitchers on the night, is awarded the win.
Five different players had two hits for the Ducks, who combined for 16 total hits, and Whalen extended his hitting streak to nine games. Portland had 13 hits overall.
The Pilots and Ducks next make the trek to Portland to play again tomorrow at Joe Etzel Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
