PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots baseball program has received commitments from 10 incoming recruits as Chris Arpan (OF, Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS), Tate Budnick (C/RHP, Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds-Woodway HS/Everett CC), Matt Carrigg (INF/RHP, Turlock, Calif./Pitman HS), Henry Cheney (OF, Gig Harbor, Wash./Charles Wright Academy), Ryan Kim (OF, Boise, Idaho/Timberline HS), Grady Miller (LHP, Wenatchee, Wash./Wenatchee HS), Josef Morris (RHP/OF, Vacaville, Calif./Vacaville HS), Christian Peters (RHP/INF, Centralia, Wash./Centralia HS), Mitchell Robinson (INF/OF, Surrey B.C./Clayton Heights Secondary/FIU/Central Arizona College) and Cal Webb (INF, Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark HS) will join the program in the fall.
Â
Arpan, Carrigg, Cheney, Kim, Miller, Morris, Peters and Webb will come to the program as freshmen, while Budnick and Robinson both come to UP with two years of eligibility remaining.
Â
"I'm honored to announce this group of phenomenal young men as Portland Pilots," Portland's first-year head coach Geoff Loomis said. "Considering the quick turnaround of being hired in June and then the process of hiring what has already proven to be an excellent staff, I'd say we've made a tremendous amount of progress in very little time. For me, it's about quality people and this class is filled with gifted baseball players who are above all else, quality people."
Â
Chris Arpan is a Portland native who is a three-year letterwinner for the Jesuit Crusaders. The Crusaders have reached the Oregon 6A State Tournament all three years, advancing to the second round in both 2013 and 2015. Arpan led the Metro League with a .440 batting average as a sophomore and he was named the team's offensive MVP that same year. The outfielder was named to the All-Metro League First Team in 2014 and he nabbed all-conference honorable mention as a junior in 2015.
Â
"Chris Arpan is a great athlete who has been a solid player at the high school level," said Loomis. "We see Chris as being versatile enough to play multiple positions at the college level. He comes from a great tradition of winning and I think that success will help him as he transitions into our program."
Â
Tate Budnick will come to The Bluff as a junior after spending two years at Everett Community College. A right-handed pitcher and catcher, Budnick was selected to play in the 2015-16 NWACC Sophomore Showcase, and he nabbed a Gold Glove as a freshman in 2015 for his work behind the plate. He helped the Trojans win the NWACC North Tournament Championship and advance to the conference championship tournament.
Â
Previously Budnick was a four-year letterwinner at Edmonds-Woodway High School in Edmonds, Wash. As a senior in 2014, Budnick earned first-team all-state accolades as both a pitcher and a catcher. He was also named to the Everett Herald All-Area First and Second Teams and he was selected to the Seattle Times Star Times All-Area Team. Additionally, Budnick was voted to the 2014 All-Wesco First Team as both a pitcher and a catcher after previously earning second-team accolades in 2011, 2012 and 2013. He helped the Warriors claim three league titles and advance to state three times, finishing as high as fifth in the state of Washington.
Â
Budnick was selected as a Pre-Season Under Armour All-American in 2013 and 2014 and he played for the Seattle Mariners Cup Team and the Seattle Mariners Scout Team in 2013.
Â
"Tate Budnick is an established and successful catcher from the junior college ranks," said Loomis. "Tate has a strong arm, is a proficient receiver, and has the ability to manage the game. A great leader, Tate has the potential to help us on the mound as well."
Â
From Turlock, Calif., where he attends Pitman High School,
Matt Carrigg is a four-year letterwinner at both shortstop and on the mound. A two-time All-Central California Conference selection and a 2015 all-district pick, Carrigg holds the school record in on-base percentage (.624) and walks (18). He also led the Pride in batting average (.493), runs (34) and ERA (1.11). He helped lead the team to the league championship last spring and he's a three-time conference all-academic selection.
Â
"Matt Carrigg is an exceptional athlete out of NorCal," noted Loomis. "Matt possesses an upper 80's to low 90's fastball and a big-time breaker. Matt is a plus runner and is also a very good shortstop. He will help us immediately on the bump and potentially as a two-way player."
Â
Henry Cheney is a multi-sport athlete at Charles Wright Academy in Gig Harbor, Wash., where he starred in the outfield for the Tarriers. He's a two-time First Team Nisqually League pick and he landed on the all-league second team in 2013. A team captain, Cheney helped lead the Tarriers to the district playoffs as a freshman and the team reached the state round of 16 during his sophomore campaign. During a game against Vashon Island, Cheney was intentionally walked six times, going 1-for-1 at the plate. That one hit was a grand slam, and he picked up the complete game win on the hill.
Â
With his club team, Cheney played in the 14 and 15u Perfect Game World Series in Fort Meyers, Fla., and he played at the 15-16u USA Baseball National Championships.
Â
"My first thought on Henry Cheney is 'athlete'," Loomis said. "Henry is a versatile baseball player and has power to all fields as a hitter. As a quarterback on his high school team, he threw for eight touchdowns and 495 yards in a single game. Henry is a great addition to our UP family."
Â
Ryan Kim is an outfielder who hails from Boise, Idaho, where he will be a four-year letterwinner at Timberline High School. Kim was a Southern Idaho All-Conference First Team selection and he batted .340 with 17 stolen bases as a junior. He also had a 5-for-5 performance, which included a home run, and he was a member of the 2015 Area Code Team. He plays club ball with the Idaho Cubs and he played for the Seattle Mariners scout team in 2015.
Â
"Ryan Kim is a left-handed, line drive hitting, center fielder from the Boise area," said Loomis. "He has a beautifully balanced swing and he has the ability to keep his bat in the hitting zone for an extended period of time. Ryan is a very polished hitter with a bright future on The Bluff."
Â
Grady Miller comes to The Bluff from Wenatchee, Wash., where he's a four-year letterwinner for the Wenatchee High School Panthers. A left-handed pitcher who has also played in the infield and outfield, he posted an 8-1 record as a junior with a sparkling 0.89 ERA. That same junior year he was named to the first-team all-state team, was tabbed as the 2015 Columbia Basin Big 9 Conference Pitcher of the Year and he earned first-team all-league as a first baseman. As a sophomore in 2014, he was voted second-team all-state and he was named to the all-conference first team as both a pitcher and a first baseman. During his freshman campaign, he landed first-team accolades as a pitcher and second-team honors as an outfielder. Miller helped lead the Panthers to third place at the 2014 Washington 4A State Tournament and Wenatchee went 20-3 in 2015.
Â
"Grady Miller is a two-time all-state left-handed pitcher out of Washington," Loomis said. "His length and arm angle make him deceptive. Grady knows how to pitch and just flat out gets outs. He's had great success and we expect him to continue that at UP."
Â
Josef Morris, who is a right-handed pitcher and plays in the outfield, led the Vacaville High School Bulldogs in hits, while batting .388. He'll come to UP from Vacaville, Calif., where he was named All-Monticello Empire League in 2015. He won the 2015 Coaches Award and the Bulldogs won the MEL League Co-Championship last spring.
Â
Morris won a state title with his American Legion team in 2014 and he was a member of the USA Baseball NIT Team that same year. Morris played club ball with the Lamorinda Monarchs, who claimed three AAU National Titles (2012-14). In 2013, Morris tossed a no-hitter against the Nelson Baseball Academy of Georgia.
Â
"Joey Morris is a hard throwing right-handed pitcher and outfielder out of Northern California," said Loomis. "Joey has the ability to dominate a game on the mound. What sticks out to me with Joey is his competitive fire. This is a young man who is used to winning and I'm excited he's chosen to join us at Portland."
Â
Right-handed pitcher/infielder,
Christian Peters is a four-year letterman for the Centralia High School Tigers. In 2015, Peters helped lead the Tigers to a Washington 2A State Championship by leading the league in both wins (6) and batting average (.423). A First Team All-Evergreen Conference pick in 2015, he also landed on the all-state and all-area teams as a junior last spring. He was named second-team all-conference as a sophomore and he has earned league all-academic all three years. Peters has three complete-game shutouts during his career and he also once fanned 11 during a game. The Tigers won a league title in 2015 and claimed the district crown in 2014.
Â
"Christian Peters is a right-handed pitcher who possesses a live fastball and command," Loomis said. "He's got that prototypical pitcher body with great length and long arms. Christian has the ability to dominate a game and I'm excited to see him grow during the next several seasons at Portland."
Â
Mitchell Robinson spent his first year in college at Florida International University before transferring to Central Arizona College his sophomore year. Robinson, who plays third base and in the outfield, appeared in 31 games and made 21 starts with the Panthers. He knocked in eight runs, had two doubles and a triple and he helped FIU claim a Conference USA Title. FIU then won a game in an NCAA Regional before their season came to an end.
Â
At Clayton Heights Secondary in Surrey, B.C., Robinson was a first-team all-star in both 2013 and 2014. As team MVP, he helped the Night Riders claim a national title in 2013 and a provincial championship in 2013. A 22nd-round pick by the Miami Marlins in the 2014 MLB Draft, Robinson was a member of the Canadian Junior National Team.
Â
"Mitchell Robinson is a standout third baseman with quick hands and power to all fields," added Loomis. "Mitchell has the ability to be a program changer and I'm thrilled to announce him as a Pilot."
Â
Cal Webb is a shortstop who has already earned three letters at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane. A three-year starter, Webb earned First Team All-Greater Spokane League as a junior after garnering second team honors his sophomore season. Team offensive and overall MVP, he hit a team-best .403 as a junior, leading the squad in hits and stolen bases. Webb also helped the Tigers claim the district championship.
Â
"Cal Webb is a tall and lean middle infielder out of Spokane," Loomis notes "He has fluid actions as an infielder and is the type of athlete that can play multiple infield positions. Cal gives us versatility, which from a coaching perspective, is a valuable commodity."
