TUCSON, Ariz. --- For the second straight day the Portland Pilots claimed a late lead at Arizona, and for the second straight day the Wildcats rallied for the win, this time prevailing 9-6 on Sunday at Hi Corbett Field. The win gives the three-game series to Arizona (15-4) and drops Portland to 4-15 on the year.
Â
Trailing 4-1 in the top of the fifth, the Pilots scored five runs to surge ahead. Michael Lucarelli began the scoring with a two-run single to left field with the bases loaded. Brady Kerr and Eric Sapp trotted home on the base hit to pull the Pilots within a run.
Â
Turner Gill followed with a single to load the bases once again and Kevin Farley drew an RBI walk after a 13-pitch at-bat. Farley fouled the ball off eight times during his lengthy stay at the plate before earning the free pass that tied the game at 4-4.
Â
Cody Lenahan then gave Portland its first lead of the afternoon with a two-run double, and with only one out the Pilots were a good position to inflict further damage. But after an intentional walk re-loaded the bases, Kerr grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
Â
The two-run lead would stand until the sixth inning when the Wildcats plated two, tying the score at 6-6. Riley Moore provided the game-tying RBI with a single up the middle off of Portland starting pitcher Davis Tominaga.
Â
Billy Sahlinger replaced Tominaga to begin the seventh inning, and the Wildcats promptly scored three runs, which sealed the win. Ryan Aguilar scored what would prove to be the game-winning run on a wild pitch, and Kevin Newman provided a little insurance with a two-run double.
Â
Sahlinger (1-1) takes the loss after allowing the three runs on three hits and a pair of walks. He would hold the Wildcats scoreless in the eighth. Tominaga worked 6.0 innings, surrendering six runs total, but only two were earned as the Pilots committed three errors on the day. The right-handed sophomore yielded nine hits and struck out four.
Â
Reliever Nathan Bannister (4-0) was one of four Arizona pitchers and he earns the win.
Â
The Wildcats scored two runs in the second inning to jump ahead 2-0, but Portland responded with a run in the top of the third. Kerr led off with a triple and Sapp followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit in half. Arizona starter Tyger Talley was then able to get out of the inning as the Pilots left two runners stranded. The Wildcats scored two more in the bottom half of the frame to make it a three-run game.
Â
The Pilots had 10 hits on the day and Lenahan finished 3-for-4 with two RBI's. Arizona had 12 hits and was led by Scott Kingery's four hits.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is their fifth straight game against a Pac-12 opponent as they travel to Corvallis on Tuesday to face the Oregon State Beavers. First pitch at Goss Stadium is set for 5:30 p.m.
