PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Kevin Wade had a solo home run and an RBI double, Kevin Farley hit an inside-the-park homer and reliever Alex Fisher tossed 5.1 scoreless innings of one-hit ball as the Pilots defeated the Loyola Marymount Lions 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. Farley's inside-the-parker came in the bottom of the seventh inning and it proved to be the difference in the West Coast Conference game.
With no outs, nobody on base, and the score tied 2-2 Farley drilled a deep fly ball to right-center field where LMU's right fielder and center fielder converged on the ball. Austin Miller couldn't come up with the diving grab, colliding with Kyle Dozier in the process. And as both players were slow to get to their feet, Farley raced around the bases, sliding head first into home with the go-ahead run.
That's all the offense Fisher would need as the sophomore right-hander was nearly unhittable. He replaced Davis Tominaga with two outs in the fourth after the starter had allowed two runs on four hits during the frame.
Fisher (1-1) cruised the rest of the way, striking out three and walking only one to earn the win. He retired the final six batters of the game in order following Farley's home run, which included fanning Tanner Donnels for the final out.
Wade was responsible for Portland's (10-35, 5-16 WCC) first two runs after the Lions (27-17, 13-8 WCC) had taken that 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Wade drove a ball deep over the wall in left field. It's the sophomore first baseman's third homer of the year and it cut the Pilots' deficit in half.
Wade again came through with a clutch hit in the bottom of the sixth, this time tying the score 2-2. With two outs and Turner Gill on second, Wade greeted new pitcher Michael Silva by sending the first pitch he saw into the gap in left-center, easily scoring Gill.
Silva (3-2) takes the loss after working 1.1 innings of relief. Sean Watkins started the game, lasting 5.2 innings. Watkins was charged with two runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out seven. Cory Abbott pitched the bottom of the eighth.
Donnels and Jimmy Jack claimed LMU's RBI's in the top of the fourth.
The Pilots next take some time off for final exams and graduation. They don't return to the field until Wednesday, May 6, when they host Seattle for a non-conference game at Joe Etzel Field.
