SALEM, Ore.--- The University of Portland men's and women's cross country teams both took first place in their respective races at the Charles Bowles Invitational at Bush's Pasture Park in Salem, Ore., Saturday morning.
The seventh-ranked Portland men started off the competition in the Cardinal 8K. Withholding some of their top runners, the men finished with a team score of 23, which was 64 points higher than second-place New Mexico, who finished with 87 points overall. Transfer Brady Johnson led the Pilots with a first-place finish (24:15.7), and he was followed by redshirt sophomore Logan Orndorf, who took second with a time of 24:15.7. Redshirt-freshman Joe Horen was a spot back in third place (24:38.4). Fabian Tomas rounded out the top five, crossing the finish line at 24:57.0. All of the Portland runners finished in the top 50, with the majority placing in the top 25.
"The team did a nice job today. I was very happy with everyone," said head coach Rob Conner. "We got a lot of personal bests today for the 8k distance. Logan and Brady dominated the race and just finished in tandem."
The Portland women also entered the meet ranked at No. 7 nationally, and they placed the majority of their harriers in the top 25 in Salem. Competing in the women's cardinal 5K, the women's "B" team finished with a score of 87, just in front of New Mexico State, who finished with 96 points. In her first race in a Portland jersey, Mathilde Sagnes led the women with a second-place finish, covering the course in 17:31.8. Senior Lindsay Tompkins recorded a time of 18:21.0, good enough for a 12th-place finish, and freshmen Natalie Smith (18:29.9) and Maddy Lyons (18:31.7) closed off the top 25.
"This was a great team performance. Everyone competed really well and I was impressed that they were able to win the meet," said head coach Ian Solof. "Mathilde will definitely add some depth to our varsity group."
The Portland men will next be in action at the Adidas Wisconsin meet in Madison, Wisc., on Oct.14, and both teams will compete at NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., on Oct. 15.
