PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots men's soccer team, who won the 2016 West Coast Conference Championship last Saturday, will face the New Mexico Lobos in the NCAA First Round on Thursday night in Albuquerque, N.M. Kickoff at the UNM Soccer Complex is scheduled for 6 p.m. (Pacific).
Â
The Pilots are making their 15th appearance in the NCAA Postseason, and it's Portland's first trip to the playoffs since 2009. Coincidentally the Pilots opened the 2009 playoffs at New Mexico as well, which was a 2-1 Portland win in overtime.
Â
The Pilots, who are under the guidance of first-year head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt, clinched the WCC Championship with a 1-0 win over the Saint Mary's Gaels in front of 4,362 fans at Merlo Field on Saturday night. Portland, which had only won one WCC game combined during the previous two seasons before Carlin-Voigt's arrival, also nabbed the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs.
Â
The WCC crown is the first for the Pilots since 2002, and it's the program's sixth overall league title. Portland has been to two NCAA College Cups ('88 & '95).
