PORTLAND, Ore. --- Sofia Castiglioni and Savanna Craig have signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Portland Pilots women's cross country team as freshmen next fall, announced head coach Ian Solof.
Â
Castiglioni, who hails from Davis, Calif., has taken first place in the three mile at the Lagoon Classic the past two years, and she claimed second during her freshman and sophomore years. She's been to the CIF State Cross Country Championships three years in a row, placing ninth and 14th in the 5K. She won the past two Delta League Championships, after previously finishing second as both a freshman and a sophomore in the 5K. Castiglioni has also competed at the Stanford Cross Country Invitational 5K all four years, where she claimed second place in 2015. She's also finished sixth and ninth twice at the prestigious event.
Â
In the three mile and the 5K, she ran PR's her junior year of high school with times of 17:54.0 and 17:44.9, respectively.
Â
"We knew Sofia would be a great fit for us as soon as she came on her visit," Solof said. "Not only has she had great success on the track and cross country course, but she is a very high-level student. She is someone who could be a varsity contributor right away and has a ton of potential to be a great college runner."
Â
Craig comes to The Bluff from Vancouver, Wash., where she has competed at Mountain View High School for four years. She's been to the 4A WIAA State Championships the past three years, placing fourth, eighth and 22nd on the 5K course. Craig has also competed at the GSHL District 4A XCÂ meet the past three years and she finished first in 2016, which followed third and fourth-place showings. She was 15th all three years that she has competed at the Nike Portland XC meet, and she placed 27th her junior year at the Nike Boarder Clash 17 in the 5K.
Â
Her junior year she recorded a personal record in the 5K with a time of 17:51.4.
Â
"Savanna really impressed me last spring and this fall," said Solof. "She has run 4:57 for a full mile and just finished fourth at the Washington State Cross Country Meet. She has a tough, aggressive racing style and isn't afraid of competition. Along with her excellent academic profile, this is exactly what we like to see in our recruits."
