DENVER, Colo. --- The Portland Pilots were solid defensively throughout the night and received a first-half goal from Gio Magana-Rivera, but the No. 6 Denver Pioneers tied it and collected the game-winner in the 108th minute to claim a 2-1 win in a non-conference men's soccer game played on Thursday night at CIBER Field. The win ends Portland's seven-game winning streak, while Denver extends their unbeaten streak to a remarkable 35 straight games.
Â
The win streak had been the longest for the Pilots since also winning seven straight in 1995.
Â
After the Pilots (11-4-1) withstood early Denver (15-0-3) pressure, the visiting side took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute. Benji Michel did well to reach the end line with possession before sending a low cross towards the center of the box. The ball found the feet of Magana-Rivera, who took a touch to avoid a defender and buried a well-hit strike into the back of the net. The goal, Magana-Rivera's third of the year, put Denver in a deficit for the first time since their first game of the season.
Â
The Pilots defended well from there and junior goalkeeper Paul Christensen provided a handful of clutch saves to keep the score 1-0.
Â
But just when it appeared the Pilots would enter halftime with the lead, the Pioneers produced the equalizer. Karsten Hanlin sent in a ball towards the far post, where Andre Shinyashiki snuck in the equalizer with a header, leveling the score 1-1.
Â
Portland's backline and Christensen continued to frustrate the Pioneers after the break, and the Pilots were able to piece together solid stretches of possession. But after 90 minutes, the game was still knotted up at 1-1.
Â
Denver attempted the only shot of the first overtime, and the Pilots forced a second extra period. And that's when the Pioneers finally put away the winner with only two-plus minutes remaining. Shinyashiki gained possession inside the top right corner of the box, reversed directions a few times and put away his second goal of the game, this time handing the hard-fought win to the home side.
Â
Christensen finished the night with four saves, with most of them coming in the first half. The Pioneers' goal in the 45th minute ended Christensen's streak of not allowing a goal at 315 minutes. The reigning WCC Player of the Week had recorded three straight shutouts.
"I'm very proud of our group for playing well tonight in tough conditions," said Portland head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt. "You could tell it was our third game in seven days but as the game went on we started to have more momentum. Credit to Denver as they are a good team and there is a reason they haven't lost at home in over two and half years. We scored a very good goal and had a lot of momentum at 1-1 in the second half but fell just sort as we gave up two goals that were preventable. I couldn't be more proud of the team for giving everything they had. Our focus now turns to the conference as we prepare for a very good Pacific team on Sunday."
Â
Portland utilized its bench extensively as the Pilots kept an eye on the upcoming WCC fixture on Sunday at Pacific. Portland enters that match in first place of the WCC at 5-0-0, while the Tigers (3-1-1) sit five points back in second place with two games left to play.

Kickoff in Stockton, Calif., is set for 1 p.m.
