THIS WEEK IN PILOTS BASEBALL
• The Pilots wrap up the 2016 campaign at home this weekend by hosting the Saint Mary's Gaels for a three-game West Coast Conference series at Joe Etzel Field.
• The series begins with a double header on Friday, with the first game starting at 2 p.m.
• The two teams then take Saturday off before concluding on Sunday at 1 p.m.
• Sunday's game will be broadcast live on Comcast SportsNet Northwest, which is channel 737 in the Portland area.
• Sunday is also senior day, and the Pilots will honor their 12 seniors with a pre-game ceremony.
LAST WEEK IN PILOTS BASEBALL
• The Santa Clara Broncos took all three games of a WCC series from the Pilots during the weekend in Santa Clara.
• During Sunday's game, it appeared the Pilots were on their way to a win with a one-run lead and two outs with nobody on in the bottom of the ninth; but a routine blooper in the infield, which was misplayed by the Pilots, turned into a double, and the Broncos were then able to tie the score with an RBI single.
• Santa Clara scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th to claim a 6-5 victory.
• Cody Hawken had previously given the Pilots the one-run lead with he broke a 4-4 tie with a solo homer in the top of the eighth.
• The Pilots were in Eugene on Tuesday to finish off a game with the Oregon Ducks that was suspended by rain on April 13; the Ducks won that game before defeating the Pilots in a regularly scheduled non-conference game; Cooper Hummel hit a pair of home runs during that second game.
ABOUT THE PILOTS
• On Tuesday in Eugene, Cooper Hummel became the second Pilot to hit two home runs in a game this season when he left the yard twice against the Oregon Ducks.
• Freshman Cody Hawken also joined the list of Portland baseball players to hit two home runs in a game when he homered in his first two career at-bats at Joe Etzel Field vs. Oakland (Feb. 26); no UP player has ever hit three home runs in the same game.
• On May 10 in Keizer, Ore., the Pilots defeated the No. 24 Oregon State Beavers for Portland's first win over OSU since a 20-13 victory in Corvallis, back in 2006; OSU had won 25 straight against the Pilots.
• It was also Portland's first win over a ranked opponent since opening the 2014 campaign with a victory over No. 12 and reigning national champion UCLA in Los Angeles.
• On Thursday, March 31 the Pilots played the 600th game ever at Joe Etzel Field, which opened in 1989.
• The crowd of 1,092 for Portland's game with No. 3 Oregon State on Tuesday, March 22 was the largest in Joe Etzel Field history; the attendance surpassed the previous best of 1,002, which was also against Oregon State back in 2007.
• The Pilots, who only stole 21 bases all of last season, currently have 69 stolen bases, which leads the WCC.
• On March 5 the Pilots stole 10 bases against UC Riverside, which is a single-game high in the WCC this season.
• Michael Forgione is second in the league with 21 stolen bases and ranks 31st nationally in stolen bases per game (0.5); Forgione has only been caught stealing three times.
• Portland has already surpassed last year's win total of 12.
• Caleb Whalen, who returned recently from an injury is tied for the most career triples in program history with 14 after claiming a three-bagger at UC Davis on Feb. 20; Whalen is tied with Larry Farrell (1958-61) and needs just one more triple to become the program leader.
• Whalen was named the WCC Position Player of the Week (Mar. 7) after hitting .462 to help lead the Pilots to a series win over UC Riverside; he also had three doubles, a home run, four runs scored and five RBI's.
• Cooper Hummel had a day on March 26 when the junior catcher went 4-for-4 with three doubles, three RBI's and three runs scored during a 7-3 win over CSUN at Joe Etzel Field; the three doubles match the program's single-game record, and he becomes the first Pilot since Rocky Gale in 2010 to accomplish the feat.
• Hummel has reached base safely during 47 of UP's 51 games.
• Hummel, a career .168 hitter entering the season, currently leads the team with a .332 batting average, five HR's and 29 RBI's; he's 10th in the WCC in batting average.
• Freshman Grant Sutton, who had missed the entire season recovering from an injury, homered in his first collegiate at-bat at Oregon on Wednesday, April 6.
• UP Athletics Hall of Famer Geoff Loomis is in his first season as head coach of the Pilots.
• Loomis spent the past 13 seasons at the helm of the Pacific Lutheran Lutes; he led the Lutes to 11 winning seasons during his tenure, including NCAA Regional appearances in 2007 and 2015 and Northwest Conference Championships in 2007, 2009 and 2015.
• Loomis (1990-92) still holds the program career record for batting average (.376) and he earned Pacific-10 North Division Player of the Year honors in 1992.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
• The Gaels have already clinched a spot in the WCC's four-team championship tournament, and Saint Mary's is seeking its first WCC regular season title.
• The Gaels are batting .264 as a team, holding their opponents to a .261 average and have a staff ERA of 3.65.
• Sophomore infielder Zach Kirtley leads the team in batting average (.311), RBI's (34), home runs (7) and doubles (15).
• Head coach Eric Valenzuela is in his third year at the helm of the Gaels.
