PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland seniors Ryan Barr and Caleb Whalen were both named to the 2016 West Coast Conference Baseball All-Academic Team, while senior Jackson Lockwood and junior Cooper Hummel earned all-academic honorable mention.
Â
Barr, who recently nabbed All-WCC Honorable Mention accolades, is a mechanical engineering major with a 3.54 cumulative GPA. The outfielder hit a team-best .284 against league opponents, and he led the Pilots with three triples on the season. He was also third on the team in doubles (8) and RBI's (21).
Â
Whalen graduated a year ago with a marketing degree and is currently working towards a masters in education. This is his third league all-academic recognition after earning honorable mention in 2014 and first-team honors in 2013. The senior outfielder finished his career tied for first in program history with 14 career triples, and he's second all-time in games played with 207. He hit .304 this season with 24 RBI's and a triple, and he lead the team with 17 doubles and five home runs.
Â
Lockwood also earned WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention a year ago after landing on the league's all-academic team in 2014. The right-handed pitcher recently notched a win on the hill against No. 24 Oregon State, which was Portland's first win over the Beavers since 2006. He also had a save this season and struck out 47 in 56.2 innings. Lockwood graduated with a degree in operations & technology management and a 3.50 GPA.
Â
This is the first all-academic recognition for Hummel, a finance major with a 3.36 GPA. The catcher had a breakout season for the Pilots this spring, leading the squad with a .320 batting average. He had team-highs of 29 RBI's, 62 hits and 37 runs, and he matched Whalen with five homers. Hummel also claimed 14 doubles, two triples, and seven stolen bases.
Â
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team.Â
