Portland women's basketball assistant coach Drew Muscatell recently completed a trip to China, where he was the head coach of the NetScouts Basketball USA All-Star Team. The team was made up of 10 NCAA Division I women's basketball players who have completed their eligibility. The players came from conferences like the Pac-12, Big-10, Mountain West, WCC and Big West.
Â
Muscatell guided the team on a three-city, nine-game tour, while competing in the Four Nations international basketball tournament. The international tourney also featured New Zealand, Poland, and China.
Â
Muscatell led the U.S. team to a perfect 9-0 record, and they regular played in front of capacity crowds while traveling to the cities of Foshan, Yuqing and Weng'an.
Â
"This trip was easily one of the greatest experiences of my life," said Muscatell, who just completed his first season on the Portland bench. "The cultural experiences from eating different food, to visiting local schools, and taking walks around each city are things that I will never forget. To go 9-0 on the tour was just icing on the cake."
Â
The team did feature some familiar names to Portland women's basketball fans as the roster included the WCC's 2014-15 Player of the Year Morgan Bailey, who played for the BYU Cougars. Also on the roster were San Francisco's Zhane Dikes and Taylor Proctor.
Â
"Playing nine games in 12 days is no easy task, but our players came out ready to play in each game," noted Muscatell. "In the end, our defense and rebounding were our greatest strengths and that's a testament to the players in how hard they played. Thank you to Chris Denker of NetScouts Basketball, coach Cheryl Sorenson, and the UP athletic department for allowing me to be a part of the trip."
The team also visited a pair of schools during their tour, where they conducted clinics and played games of 3-v-3 with some of the students.
