PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots women's basketball program is adding a recruit from Australia as Haylee Andrews (Townsville, Australia/Townsville State HS) has signed a National Letter of Intent, announced head coach Cheryl Sorenson. The guard will join the Pilots as a freshman in the fall.
Haylee Andrews is 5-9 guard who won gold with her team at the D2 Australian Championships. Andrews averaged 30 points during the state tournament, and she poured in a game-high 35 points during one contest. She also played for the QLD North State Team from 2014-17, averaging 13 points, five rebounds and five assists during at the U18 National Championships.
"We think we got special player with Haylee Andrews!" Sorenson said. "Watching her play, we loved her competitive fire and toughness. We love her confidence as a player and her will to want to continue to get better. As a junior player in Australia, she has competed on the highest level and held her own. She has shown she can score it in a variety of ways. She loves to push the pace in transition and get her teammates involved. Probably her biggest strength is her ability to create off the dribble and get to the rim."
Andrews is currently a developmental player with the Townsville Fire of the WNBL, which is the Australian equivalent of the WNBA. Previously she played with the Townsville Flames in the QBL semipro league in Queensland, averaging 10 points, two assists and two rebounds per contest.
"Her experience with the WNBL program is something that American players don't get to do," noted Sorenson. "Going up against pro's in practice and learning from them every day is a huge advantage that we believe will allow her to compete right away for us. We couldn't be more excited to have her be a part of our family!"
