THIS WEEK IN PILOTS BASEBALL
• The Pilots conclude the 2017 season at home with a three-game West Coast Conference series with the Loyola Marymount Lions at Joe Etzel Field.
• First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, while Sunday's season finale will begin at 1 p.m.
• Friday's game will be broadcast live on Comcast SportsNet Northwest, while video will be provided for all three contests on TheW.tv.
• Portland will also honor its five seniors with a pre-game ceremony on Sunday.
 
LAST WEEK IN PILOTS BASEBALL
• The No. 1 Oregon State Beavers broke open a close game on Tuesday with a four-run fifth inning en route to a 7-1 win over the Pilots at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer, Ore.
• After an epic 23-19 BYU win to open last week's WCC series in Provo on Thursday, the Cougars rolled to wins on Friday and Saturday to sweep the Pilots.
• The Cougars led that Thursday night slugfest 17-14 after three innings, and the Pilots twice rallied to tie it before BYU held on for the win.
• Portland homered four times on Thursday, including two home runs from Ryan Hoogerwerf.
• Hoogerwerf went 4-for-5 with four RBI's and four runs scored, Dutton Elske was 4-for-6 with three RBI's and three runs scored, Cody Hawken knocked in four runs with three hits, and Mike Hicks added three hits and three runs.
• The game featured the most combined runs in one game in the 94-year history of the UP baseball program, and it's the most runs ever scored by the Pilots during a loss.
 
ABOUT THE PILOTS
• The Pilots made history last Thursday night when they dropped a 23-19 decision at BYU; the game featured the most combined runs in one game in the 94-year history of the UP baseball program, and it's the most runs ever scored by the Pilots during a loss.
• Senior reliever Marty Luckenbach notched his sixth of the season against Oregon on May 9, which ties him for the ninth most saves in a single season in program history.
• Sophomore right-hander Kevin Baker has reached double digits in strikeouts three times this season, including fanning a career-high 13 at Pacific (April 30); the 13 K's are tied for the third most in a game ever for the Pilots.
• Baker struck out 11 in 6.1 innings against Santa Clara (April 2), and he struck out 11 more in 10.0 scoreless innings vs. Pepperdine on April 9.
• He ranks 27th nationally and is third in the WCC in K's per 9.0 innings (11.41); he also has the Pilots' lone complete game this season, and his 3.03 ERA ranks fifth in the conference; he also ranks fifth on Portland's single season charts for K's per 9.0 innings.
• Freshman starter Grady Miller has a two games this season with 10 K's or more, with the lefty fanning 10 during at Pacific (April 29); he previously struck out a career-best 12 in 7.0 innings during a win over Northwestern (March 10).
• The 16-inning game against Pepperdine at Joe Etzel Field on April 9 was the longest game for the Pilots since also playing a 16-inning contest in 2008 vs. Northern Illinois.
• Portland's 10-10 tie at Seattle U on April 5 was the first tie for the Pilots since 2003.
• The capacity crowd of 1,300 to watch the Pilots and No. 1 Oregon State on April 4 was the largest in Joe Etzel Field history; the previous high was 1,092, which also came against Oregon State last season.
• Sophomore Matt Kelly and redshirt-freshman Beau Brundage are leading the Pilots offensively, batting .298 and .285, respectively; Kelly is batting .314 during league contests, and Brundage recently had career and team-high 11-game hitting streak.
• Sophomore Cody Hawken has a team high of 27 RBI's; his brother Jake is a junior pitcher for the Pilots.
• Last Thursday Ryan Hoogerwerf joined a long list of Pilots to hit two homers in the same game when he left the yard twice at BYU; no Pilot has ever homered three times in the same game.
• Portland's game against Seattle on March 22 was the 600th in the coaching career of skipper Geoff Loomis; the UP alum and Athletics Hall of Fame member is in his second season at the helm of the Pilots after 13 seasons as head coach at Pacific Lutheran, where he led the Lutes to 11 winning seasons and two NCAA Regional appearances.
• Loomis (1990-92) still holds the UP program career record for batting average (.376) and he earned Pacific-10 North Division Player of the Year honors in 1992.
• The Pilots opened the season with 11 straight road games before finally playing at Joe Etzel Field on March 10; 15 of Portland's first 20 games are on the road.
• The new-look Pilots entered the season with 14 returning letterwinners, only two position starters and three starting pitchers.
• Portland welcomed 20 new players to the program this year, which includes 12 freshmen, two redshirt-freshmen and six JC transfers.
 
ABOUT THE LIONS
• The Lions are receiving votes in the national polls and are coming off a 4-0 win at Oregon on Wednesday.
• LMU is batting .294 as a team and senior Phil Caulfield leads eight players hitting better than .300 with a team-high .372 mark, which ranks second in the WCC.
• Opponents are hitting .242, and the Lions lead the league with a staff ERA of 3.47.
• Junior righty Cory Abbot is tied for the lead nationally with 11 wins, his 1.60 ERA is 10th in the country, and he ranks 11th in strikeouts with 103; he's a perfect 8-0 against conference foes and his ERA is a miniscule 0.15 during league play.
• Jason Gill is in his ninth year as head coach.
