PORTLAND, Ore. – Despite scoring four runs in the seventh and eighth innings, the Portland Pilots (20-15) came up just short against the No. 20 Oregon Ducks (25-11) 5-4 at Joe Etzel Field. The Ducks officially sweep the season series.
KJ Ruffo took the loss for the Pilots, his first of the season. Five different pitchers in total saw the mound for Portland, with Eli Morse being the most effective. He went two innings with two strikeouts and only one hit allowed in the third and fourth.
Portland had four runs off six hits. Jake Tsukada had half of those hits, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. That matches his season-high for hits in a game. Sam Brown, Briley Knight and Riley McCarthy were the only other Pilots to record hits.
The Ducks put up three runs in the first two innings to give themselves an early cushion. Jacob Walsh hit an RBI single that gave Oregon their first run in the opening inning. They added two more runs in the second, scoring one off a passed ball and another off a second RBI single. The Ducks led 3-0 after two innings.
They built on that lead in the sixth inning. Anthony Hall stepped to the plate with a runner on base and crushed a homer over the right-field wall. The Ducks held a 5-0 lead after six, keeping the Pilots to just one hit in the process.
That all changed in the seventh. The Pilots finally put together a solid offensive inning, scoring three runs. Sam Brown brought in the first run with an RBI double to right field. Briley Knight then made it home off a soft grounder to first base. Brown scored the final run to cut Oregon's lead to two.
The Pilots were within striking distance, closing the gap even more in the eighth. After Riley McCarthy hit a triple, Jake Tsukada hit a deep ball off the wall to bring McCarthy home and make it 5-4. The Pilots finally had a chance. But unfortunately, no runs would cross the plate for them in the final inning, leaving them with a loss.
Next up, the Pilots will stay in Portland for their three-game WCC series against the Pacific Tigers. The opener will take place on Friday, April 22 at 6 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video.
