VANCOUVER, Wash. --- The University of Portland rowing team had a solid showing on Sunday as the Pilots competed for the first time against collegiate competition at the Portland Fall Classic at Vancouver Lake. UP’s novice eight finished first in their race, while the first varsity eight placed fourth.
Portland’s second varsity eight posted a seventh-place finish.
“The whole team performed well,” head coach Bill Zack said. “Everything went very smoothly for our first collegiate event. We were pleased with the results, but we weren’t necessarily surprised because we’ve seen them perform like that every day at practice. The goal was to perform as well as we could in the race, and everybody on the team did that for sure.”
The novice eight, which was the first Portland boat to compete on the 5,000 meter course, posted a time of 21:11.28 and finished first among the seven-team field. Lewis & Clark was second with a time if 21:40.40. Portland’s novice eight consisted of Kassie Meras, Hayley Patin, Jamie Opra, Lauren Mainero, Kelly Herman, Emma Wilander, Molly Donahue, Sarah Larrabee and coxswain Juliet Rubio.
UP’s first varsity eight finished behind only Washington State, who finished first with a time of 18:03.78, Oregon State and Gonzaga. The crew of Sarah Donohoe, Michelle Bolliger, Leanne Bingham, Melissa Gomez, Mia Tarte, Ellie Ficco, Kayla Russell, Sarah Ryan and coxswain Taylor Nelson posted a time of 19:50.88.
“Our good performance on Sunday should give the team the confidence to know that we’re heading in the right direction,” said Zack. “It should also give them the motivation to work hard and continue to improve.”
Portland’s second varsity eight had a time of 22:31.78 and was made up of Kaitlyn Schuh, Hayley Patin, Megan Tienken, Sara Collette, Kaelynn Schmall, Camden Revell, Rachel Lee, Cloee Hussey and coxswain Katelyn Freund.
“The nicest thing about the whole weekend was the buzz surrounding UP rowing,” Zack said of the first-year program. “It was great to have everybody there so aware and so interested in what’s happening with our team and our program.”
The Portland Fall Classic was the only collegiate completion of the fall for the Pilots, who competed at the Race for the Cure in September. Portland’s next scheduled race is March 3.
