DEXTER, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots women’s rowing team posted four first-place finishes, twice holding off NCAA Division II power Humboldt State, to claim the team Efficiency Trophy at the Covered Bridge Regatta at Dexter Lake on Saturday. Portland’s first eight, second eight, novice eight and varsity four each won their event.
“Everybody on the team raced well,” said head coach Bill Zack. “Winning the team trophy is a reflection of not only the speed of our top boat, but the speed and depth throughout the team.
“We want to thank the organizers of the Covered Bridge Regatta for putting on such a well-run event.”
UP’s first eight, with coxswain Hannah Dahlem, covered the 2,000 meters in 07:10.37, which was seven seconds better than runner-up Humboldt State. This was Dahlem’s first race ever with the Pilots after joining the team in January.
Portland’s second eight also finished on top of the field, finishing eight seconds faster than second-place Lewis & Clark. The Pilots posted a time of 07:31.20. Sophomore Lauren Mainero stroked the second eight, as well as the novice eight, which also won its event.
The novice eight, which had a time of 07:45.37, held off Lewis & Clark for the win.
Freshman Ellie Ficco was one of many Pilots to participate in multiple events as she rowed in the six seat of the first eight before jumping in to stroke the first four, which was the fourth Portland boat to finish first. Both Portland’s first four and the Humboldt State four pulled away from the field, with Portland finishing four seconds in front of the Lumberjacks with a time of 07:52.90.
Freshman Sarah Donohoe remains undefeated this season, as does pre-season all-conference selection Mia Tarte, who rowed starboard in the first eight and port in the first four at the Covered Bridge Regatta.
Portland’s second four finished second to Humboldt State with a time of 07:53.77, while UP’s novice four placed seventh.
The Pilots next travel to the Opening Day Regatta, which is set for May 5 in Seattle, Wash.
