SEATTLE, Wash. --- The Portland Pilots raced three of their boats at the Windermere Cup on Lake Washington last weekend before traveling to Sacramento, Calif., for the upcoming West Coast Conference Championships. The Pilots raced their varsity eight, their second eight and their varsity four at the Windermere Cup, which was held as part of the celebration of Seattle's Opening Day of Boating Season.
First to compete for the Pilots was their varsity four, which turned in a time of 08:05.4.
Portland’s two eight’s then followed by placing second and fourth with times of 07:01.6 and 07:17.3, respectively. UP’s varsity eight got out to a slight lead early before finishing second by just 1.2 seconds to first-place Washington.
“The team raced well, but in the eights Washington proved to be a bit too tough in the final stretch,” said Portland head coach Bill Zack of the back-and-forth race. “We’ll use the experience and lessons from Seattle in final preparation for the WCC championships.
“We want to also give special thanks to the University of Washington, the Seattle Yacht Club, and Windermere Real Estate for putting on such a great event. It was an honor to be involved in one of the great rowing spectacles that shows how awesome the sport really is.”
The WCC Championships are set to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
