PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots dropped their second game of the series against the Pepperdine Waves, falling 5-2. The loss evens the series between the two teams.
Carter Gaston (2-6) started and took the loss on the mound for Portland (15-20, 8-3). The right-hander went six innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out five. The Pilots accrued 10 hits but just two runs, led by Zach Toglia's 2-for-4 day with an RBI. Tyler Howard extended his on-base streak to 28 games, however, the longest since Trevor Hahn in 2002. Howard went 2-for-5 on the day as well.
How it Happened
The Pilots got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Portland got an RBI single from Toglia, scoring Brady Bean from second base.
The bats went silent after that, with Portland going scoreless and Pepperdine scoring five runs. The Pilots scored once more in the ninth inning, but couldn't get anything else, losing 5-2.
