Hey Pilot fans!
The last two weekends have been hectic ones for your Portland Pilots. First of all, we had a solid victory over the University of San Francisco on Halloween. It was great to recognize all of the accomplishments of our amazing senior class, as well as get them the win they deserved. We followed that win up with a tie at St. Mary’s this last Saturday.
On the same weekend we honored the old, the senior class, we also welcomed in the new. Yes, all the members of the incoming class of 2011 were on The Bluff for their official visits. This is an exciting time for the recruits as well as the current players because we get to enjoy one of our favorite traditions: the unforgettable house tour.
During the house tour, all members of our team decide on a theme of their room or house and dress up/decorate their residence in that theme. Then, we all travel from place to place, doing activities at each location. This is a unique opportunity for us to express our creativity while collectively embarrassing ourselves in front of the oblivious student body. There is nothing more awkward than entering a dorm with some normal students, Harry Potter and three Lady Gagas. Having said that, the house tour is indubitably one of the highlights of the season.
Though it was their first year, the freshmen had a spectacular inaugural house tour. Dees and Nichole dressed up as comedian Jeff Dunham and his puppet, Achmed the Dead Terrorist. Roommates Ellen and Sarah Bridges were Phil and Lil, the twin babies from the Nickelodeon show Rugrats. The three remaining freshmen, Amanda, Micaela, and Michelle Cruz were Harry Potter characters. Amanda was an especially realistic Ron Weasely, complete with bright red eyebrows taped to her forehead.
From the sophomore class, Elinor, Molly, and Cloee were zombies. Taylor and Kendall dressed up as boys, providing the team with a very entertaining music video of their song “Teach me how to Wozzie”. This spin-off of “Teach me how to Dougie” pays homage to Pilot alum Angie Woznuk and features Taylor and Kendall showing off their enviable dance moves. The song will undoubtedly be entering the Billboard Top 100; you heard it here first.
The juniors and seniors, experienced house tour participants, did not disappoint. All of the off-campus residents dressed up as contestants from our favorite childhood game show, Legends of the Hidden Temple. Halley and Dani were the Red Jaguars, Sara Jackman and Kristen were the Blue Barracudas, and Kassi and I were the Silver Snakes. We had a multifaceted performance that included a swing dance by Kassi and Sara (credit to the University of Portland dance class) and harmonious singing by Halley, Kristen, and Dani. Our tune mentioned our trainer Greg, a worthy honoree whose innumerable contributions to our team are now remembered in song. Kendra and Mo (Michelle Olivier) dressed up as divas, putting on a character that went much deeper than just the outfit. As we have come to expect, Kendra again impressed us with her singing while Mo performed some of the funniest backup dancing known to man. The final group, Keelin, Hailee, Elli, and Jess, all dressed up as Lady Gaga. Elli was responsible for the most comical moment of their house tour stop, taking a tumble down the stairs in her high heels and leopard print onesie, proving once again that soccer players and heels are a volatile combination.
Work hard and play hard. That’s what Pilot soccer is all about.
Until next time,
Emma Nelson #21
