Hey Pilot Fans –
Finally…..practices have officially started!
Monday morning at approximately 5:30 a.m., the Portland Pilots women’s basketball team alarms were going off… Good morning Pilots, time for practice #1 of the 2010-2011 season!!
In fact, paranoid that I would sleep through the alarms (yes, that is plural J) I set on my phone, I made a special outing this past weekend to Bed Bath and Beyond to purchase an extra loud alarm clock – just in case. So, with not one, not two, not three, but FOUR alarms set, I slept well knowing that I would be awakened in time for practice. My hope was to be out of bed before my new alarm clock went off – the piercing noise it makes is absolutely terrifying!
I learned the first morning that freshmen roommates Amy and CB (Cassandra Brown) prefer to wake up to a music alarm clock. They like to start their early mornings waking up to “The Climb” by teen pop star, Miley Cyrus (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG2zyeVRcbs). “It’s inspirational,” they told me.
Senior post, Lauren, feeling that she may need some extra inspiration as she rolls out of bed in the wee hours of the morning, decided that it just might be worthwhile to invest in an “inspirational” song. So, Lauren officially jumped on what I now call the “Mornings-with-Miley” bandwagon with Aims and CB!
Anyway, extra loud, music-alarm clock or not, no one overslept. Everyone made it to practice on time, and ready to get started!
Day 1 of practice was good - definitely a solid start to a fun and promising season. There was a ton of enthusiasm and intensity brought by the team, as well as the coaches. Team captain, Z (ReZina), said this about practice:
“The first practice went well. We brought a lot of energy to each of the drills, and pushed each other physically and mentally. Most importantly, we stuck together to finish practice strong, battling through conditioning. The team is coming along and I’m excited to see what the future holds for us”
Also, I would like to acknowledge the mistake I made in my last blog. I realized that my count down to our first practice was incorrect. The gym was being used for the annual Student Athlete Banquet on Sunday therefore Sunday’s practice was moved to Monday.
Each team attended the banquet Sunday night. It was a very nice event put on by the Athletic Department in which student athletes were recognized and honored for their academic achievements. Our very own Tara Cronin earned the WCC All Academic Award for the Spring of 2010. Alexis Gannis was also acknowledged for her outstanding academic accomplishments and won the Top 6 Award for the School of Education. Congrats, TC and Lex!
Well, Pilot Fans, that is all for now. I can’t wait to catch up next week.
Hope you are enjoying the sunny weather!
Have a great one,
Sarah
