In our first matchup this weekend we lost to UC Irvine 3-1. Unfortunately the score did not represent the play of the game, but that is a concept that often happens in the game of soccer—cough cough UW last year in the second round. After two days off, we were able to refocus and beat Cal State Northridge 1-0 in overtime. Amanda Frisbie was the one to thank after she put a shot into the back of the net just 27 seconds into overtime. I was so excited after we scored that I jumped up off of the bench and proceeded to hit my head on the tent that was over our bench. Needless to say, I pushed through the pain so that I could run onto the field and celebrate with my team. This weekend seemed to be the weekend for fun times and even funnier stories.
The weekend started off with a game of soccer golf on Thursday. The team was split into pairs as we competed on the eight “hole” course that was the UC Irvine game field. The “holes” were located in each of the corner circles, the place where the half-line meets the side-line, and each of the penalty kick marks. Now, when our team plays these fun games it usually gets a little heated due to our nature to be over competitive. After everyone played each hole, the scores were added and Mo (Michelle Oliver) and Sippy (Emily Sippel) were crowned champions with a score of 21 and Taylor and I received second place honors with a score of 22. Halley—whose team scored a 31—was determined to convince the team that the highest score should win, she was not successful. After soccer golf we played one final game which was to see who could kick the ball closest to the penalty kick marker from roughly 50 yards away. After everyone kicked one ball there was only one winner…and that was me. Yes, yes, that is right, a goalkeeper actually won.
On Friday, we were faced with the daunting task of driving from UC Irvine to Cal State Northridge. In any other city this drive would not have been that bad, but due to L.A’s relentless traffic the drive took a little over two hours instead of one. Then, after a quick stop at the hotel, we jumped back onto the bus for a thirty minute drive to Cruz’s house to hang out. Once at Cruz’s house it was clear that we needed to blow off some steam, so it was decided that we were going to try and throw Micaela into the pool. However, this task was not as easy as we had hoped because Micaela put up a good fight. The closest she got to the pool was about three feet when she was wrapped around my ankles. At this time, Dani decided to get in on the action as she sprinted over and shoved me in the back in the direction towards the pool. Unable to go anywhere due to Micaela holding onto my feet, I dropped to my knees as my head and right arm entered the pool. After that the group gave up trying to get Micaela into the pool because they were too busy laughing at me. And after repeated apologies from Dani, I have finally forgiven her.
On the bus ride back to the hotel from Cruz’s we decided to have a dance party. The stars—whether they wanted to be or not—were the freshmen. We picked the song and they had to dance up and down the aisle. I would say that the best dance was a tie between Rebekah, Malloy, and Lorielle and the worst dance was performed by Sippy. After the freshmen were done doing their thing our team enjoyed singing and the occasional dance move, but the highlight of the night occurred when we coerced our trainer into dancing. Reluctantly he stood up and proceeded to dance down the aisle, and surprisingly he was not that bad. Good work Grgs!
I hope you enjoyed these stories and maybe there will be more to report next time, until then,
