Hey Pilot Fans,
‘Tis the season!
We are done with finals, which marks the end of the fall semester. It’s finally winter break. AND Christmas is just around the corner!
First off, the girls went 1-1 down in California. (
Pacific Recap I UC Irvine Recap) Let’s keep getting better every game, practice, and day – and when conference arrives on Jan. 8 (v. Gonzaga) show the WCC what Pilot’s Hoops is all about!
Continuing from my previous blog, the Pilot Nickname evaluation will highlight my fellow sophomore teammate, Sarah Kliewer (name as appeared on the Pilot roster) from Spokane, Wash.
Nickname
As Z explained in
Blog #9, there were two Sarah’s in the incoming class of the 2009-2010 year, and Ags (Egle). Or, as some dubbed our group, “The Sarah’s and the Transfer”.
Anyway, obviously, two Sarah’s would just not fly. Consequently, we ended up with no Sarah’s but a Lil’ G and Suzy in turn.
Sarah Kliewer’s nickname is Suzy, or Suz for short.
Origin
Coach Jay, our weight and conditioning coach, was the individual who dubbed Suz, Suzy – and I will never forget the day when Suz earned her nickname.
Suz, Ags and I were on campus for school in the summer of 2009 and were working out with Coach Jay. If I remember correctly this was one of our very first workouts with Jay - what I DO remember though is that it was tough!
Once we were done lifting in the weight room we headed upstairs to the track for conditioning. After completing the kettle-bell swing/lap-sprint pyramid, in between the huffs and puffs Suz turns to Coach Jay and manages to ask, “Do you have chap stick?”
Did she seriously just as for chap stick, I remember thinking as I was trying to catch my breath as well. Jay’s facial expression matched my confusion, while simultaneously answering her question - no.
To poke fun at Suz’s request, Jay started calling her Suzy Chapstick. He explained that Suzy Chaffee, an Olympic skier, used to do commercials for chap stick and was called Suzy Chapstick: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ev7DHWG7wsY
However, since that workout I have heard that same request countless times. Sadly, it has come to the point now where I can tell by the look on her face that she is going to ask me if I have chap stick. She is simply obsessed. No kidding, obsessed – who else carries chap stick in their sock? During games?!? :)
So, like Lil’ G, Suz has stuck.
Anyway, after the UC Irvine game the girls were homeward bound to spend Christmas with their family. Pilots, hope you have a wonderful holiday with your family and friends and I will be seeing ya soon!
As for y’all, have a very Merry Christmas! Best wishes for the upcoming year!
LETS GO PILOTS!
